ATHENS, Ga. – Led by junior Carla Bernat, who is in first place at 8-under par, the Kansas State women's golf team is tied for fourth place at 9-over par 585 following the first two rounds of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday at the par-72, 6,351-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.
The Wildcats carded a 6-over par 294 in the first round to reside in fifth place, but they recorded a 3-over par 291 in the second round to improve one spot on the leaderboard.
"Overall, we played really well today, and I'm pleased with where we're at through two rounds," head coach Stew Burke said. "This golf course is extremely tough. You need to be very smart with your plan and not get ahead of yourself. We appeared to make less mistakes than other teams at crucial moments. However, there are still a few things we need to clean up. Carla led the team well today and performed great, and we had good backup from Haley (Vargas) in the morning and Napua (Glossner) in the afternoon. It will be important to have five players in it for 18 holes tomorrow to move us up the leaderboard."
Bernat recorded a first-round score of 3-under par 69 before carding a 5-under par 67 in the second round as she holds a one-shot lead over Georgia's Caterina Don entering the final 18 holes.
A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat now has 11 rounds in the 60s this season, including six in the last three events. She now has 14 under-par rounds this season, the most by a Wildcat since Madison Talley had 15 during the 2015-16 season. Bernat had a bogey on No. 7 in the first round – her first hole of the day – but went bogey free and 9-under par the rest of the day.
Senior Haley Vargas is tied for 26th place at 4-over par 148. She began the event with a 1-under par 71 in the first round, her seventh-consecutive round of even or under par. She holds a 36-hole score of 4-over par 148.
Another senior, Napua Glossner, is tied for 42nd place at 6-over par 150. She went 6-over par in the first round but came back with an even-par round in the afternoon to jump 19 spots up the leaderboard.
Freshman Alenka Navarro is tied for 55th place at 10-over par 154, one shot ahead of sophomore Noa van Beek, who is tied for 62nd place at 11-over par 155.
No. 10 Auburn went 5-under par in the second round to take a six-shot lead into the final round at 3-under par 573. The Tigers are ahead of 25th-ranked Georgia, which went 3-over par over the first 36 holes on its home course.
The final round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic begins on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
