Wildcats Claim 4-3 Win Over TCU to Advance to Quarterfinal Round

STILLWATER, Okla.- The no. 10 K-State women's tennis team advances to the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship after defeating no. 7 seed TCU 4-3 in the first round on Wednesday (April 17) at Greenwood Tennis Center.
#73 K-State (12-11) will now face the no. 2 seed and #7 ranked Texas (19-4) on Thursday (April 18) at 3 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed by Big 12 NOW on ESPN+.
The Wildcats were awarded the doubles point following a post-match protest of #46 TCU (12-9) doubles lineup, after the teams split the six singles matches.
The Cats' first doubles win came from freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav and sophomore Maria Santos, victorious 6-4, prior to a forfeit, over Raquel Caballero and Chiho Mushika in the no. 2 spot. Against #64 ranked doubles team Jade Otway and Pascual in the no. 1 position, junior Veronika Kulhava and freshman Tereza Polakova were defeated 6-1.
Splitting the first two doubles matches, freshman Jillian Harkin and senior Manami Ukita competed in the no. 3 spot against Destinee Martins and Helena Narmont where the final score of 7-6 (7-5) was awarded in favor of K-State.
In singles matches, Ukita faced Tsai for the second time this season, their first matchup on March 17 in Manhattan, this time Ukita was victorious in the no. 5 position, 6-2, 6-3.
Polakova also faced a similar opponent, previously going unfinished against Raquel Caballero in the regular season, she won this time in the no. 4 spot after a tiebreaker second set, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Santos won the first three set match of the day against Narmont. In the no. 6 position, Santos dropped the first set 3-6 but battled back in the next two 6-3, 6-1, almost leaving her opponent scoreless in the last set.
Sophomore Vanesa Suarez was the third Wildcat to face the same Horned Frog opponent twice this season, in the no. 2 spot against Otway. Suarez claimed the first set in a high scoring 7-5 but fell in the second set and could not regain momentum, losing 7-5, 4-6, 4-6.
Freshman Charlotte Keitel faced the only ranked opponent, #78 Destinee Martins, in the no. 1 position, where she lost 6-0, 6-1.
Chogsomjav was the last one to finish competing, encountering consecutive tiebreaker sets against Pascual in the no. 3 spot. Chogsomjav started off winning the first set 6-1 before falling short in the second 6-7 (3-7). She started the third set down 0-3 but was able to battle back and force another tiebreaker decision where she ultimately could not hold on, losing 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-7 (7-9).
K-State advances to the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2022 when the Championship was hosted in Fort Worth, Texas. They will face the Longhorns after the first meeting this season in Austin, Texas, on March 24 where the Cats lost 4-0.
The Texas lineup still includes multiple ranked singles players, including in the top-50, #22 Malaika Rapolu, #25 Sabina Zeynalova and #37 Tanya Sasnouskaya. They also feature two ranked doubles, #15 Pachkaleva and Zeynalova and #36 Rapolu and Sasnouskaya.
