Wildcats Reach Double Digit Wins in 4-1 Victory Over Houston

K-State earns win no. 10 in the first Big 12 road victory of the spring
HOUSTON, Texas- The K-State women's tennis team claimed win no. 10 on Sunday (April 7) with the first Big 12 conference road victory, 4-1 at Houston at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
In head coach Jordan Smith's 50th win at the helm, #74 K-State (10-10, 4-8 Big 12) battled through singles matches over the Cougars (2-16, 0-11 Big 12), in high scoring and three set matches.
The Wildcats dropped a consecutive doubles point, junior Veronika Kulhava and freshman Tereza Polakova competing together again for the only win, 6-2 over Sophie Schouten and Sonya Kovalenko in the no. 1 spot.
In the no. 2 position, freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav and sophomore Maria Santos were defeated 6-4 by Maria Dzemeshkevich and Laura Slisane. Similarly, freshman Jillian Harkin and senior Manami Ukita fell short 6-4 to Blanca Cortijo Perreno and Elena Trencheva in the no. 3 spot.
Polakova bounced back after a loss against UCF on Friday, for the first singles win of the day, defeating Cortijo Perreno in two high scoring sets, 7-5, 7-5, in the no. 4 position.
Freshman Charlotte Keitel swept her opponent, Dzemeshkevich in the no. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-4. Santos recorded a consecutive singles win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in the no. 6 position over Gabriela Cortes.
Ukita clinched the match for the Wildcats, competing in another three set battle. She claimed the first set 6-4 before falling short in the second 2-6. Ukita kept the momentum up to secure the win 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
Two more Wildcats fought back into three sets— Chogsomjav dropped the first set against Slisane in the no. 2 position 2-6, but came back in the second 6-4. Competing in a high scoring third set, the match went unfinished 2-6, 6-4, 5-6.
After not competing against UCF, Kulhava commanded a second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4) over Schouten in the no. 3 spot, before the match ended at 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-2.
K-State returns to Mike Goss Tennis Stadium on Friday (April 12) for the last home match of the season in a non-conference matchup against Louisiana Tech (14-6, 3-1 CUSA) at 1 p.m.

- Smith was elevated to K-State's head coach on July 2, 2018, after serving as associate head coach the previous season and first joining the Wildcats in 2015.
- In his first season at the helm in 2018-19, he led the team to a 13-11 record, with the most regular season wins so far at 12.
- Before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the 2019-20 season short, the Wildcats accumulated an 8-4 non-conference record.
- The team last reached another double-digit winning record in 2021-22 at 10-13, playing through the Big 12 tournament quarterfinal round.
- This season, the Cats have been featured in the ITA team rankings for five weeks, and under his guidance the team has reached a national ranking as high as no. 33 in 2019.
