NORMAN, Okla. – The Kansas State women's golf team earned a 3-2 victory over Oklahoma State on Tuesday morning before falling to Houston by the same margin in the afternoon as the Wildcats finished in sixth place at the Match Play at Jimmie Austin held at the par-72, 6,512-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
K-State went 1-2 over its three matches on Monday and Tuesday, the first time the Wildcats have participated in a match play tournament in nearly a year.
"We played a lot of good golf today and looked much more comfortable under pressure," first-year head coach Stew Burke said. "We had a few matches that could have flipped our way, but I'm proud of the battle and feel good about our final preparations for Big 12's. Rest and tune ups will be the focus of this week as we prepare for the conference championship."
Junior Carla Bernat earned a pair of dominating victories as she defeated Oklahoma State's Marta Silchenko, 6&4, in the morning before a 4&3 victory over Houston's Alexa Saldana in the afternoon.
Senior Haley Vargas won her morning match against Oklahoma State's Sammie Miller, 6&4, while freshman Julia Ballester Barrio also picked up a victory over OSU's Thitaporn Saithip, 4&3. In the afternoon, sophomore Noa van Beek topped Houston's Brooke Morales, 4&3.
"Haley, Julia, and Noa won big matches for us today, and Carla again showed why she's one of the best in the country with a clean sweep of matches," Burke said.
Host-school Oklahoma claimed the team title after earning a 3-1-1 victory over Tulsa in the championship match. North Texas won the third-place match against Texas Tech, 3-1-1.
Next up for Kansas State is the 2024 Big 12 Championship, next Thursday through Saturday, at Houston Oaks Golf Club in Hockley, Texas.
