MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior women's golfer Carla Bernat begins the final leg of her championship chase as she is set to compete in the 2024 NCAA Championship, Friday through Monday, at the par-72, 6,330-yard La Costa Champions Course of the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California.
Bernat, the top-seeded player who is competing solely as an individual, will begin her 72-hole quest for a national championship on Friday afternoon with a 2:12 p.m. (PT) start time off the first tee. She will then be part of the morning wave on Saturday with an 8:52 a.m. (PT) start off the 10th tee, while Sunday's tee times will be based on the 36-hole results. There will be a cut after Sunday's third round with the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team competing in Monday's final round.
A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat is just the second Wildcat ever to compete in the NCAA Championship as Christine Boucher tied for 64th in the 2003 edition with a 72-hole score of 27-over par 311.
"Carla is looking forward to a great week in California," first-year head coach Stew Burke said. "She has had some good preparation coming in and is getting acclimated well to the different courses and grass on the West Coast. This is another opportunity for Carla to compete against the best players in the country at the collegiate level, and I expect her to maintain her great play that has been with her all season."
Bernat, who ranks 22nd among collegiate golfers and 25th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, advanced to the NCAA Championship by carding a 7-under par 209 in the NCAA Bryan (Texas) Regional to finish as the top individual on a non-advancing team and tie for third overall. Her three-round total was the best in K-State's NCAA Regional history by seven shots.
Bernat enters the final event of her junior season with a 70.32 scoring average, which currently ranks first in school history by over 2.5 shots per round. She has produced nine top-20 finishes in her 10 stroke-play starts, which includes four top-five showings in addition to two victories. Her two wins are tied for third in school history for a career, while her six overall top-five placings are tied for fifth in a career.
Throughout her first campaign in Manhattan, Bernat has produced six of the top 11 54-hole scores in school history, which includes a season-low 9-under par 207 in a victory at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, a score that tied for third in K-State history. Her performance at the Liz Murphy – in addition to a third-place finish with a score of 7-under par 209 at the MountainView Collegiate two weeks prior – was the driving force behind her being named the Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Month for March.
"Playing the National Championship is a huge honor, and she has done a great job of representing our team as an individual in the postseason," Burke said. "As she gets underway in the afternoon on Friday, we sure hope our K-State Golf fans are following along online."
