Stewart Qualifies for NCAA Championship in 3,000 Meter Steeplechase

Seven Wildcats will compete in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field on June 5-8
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Hannah Stewart became the last NCAA Championship qualifier for the K-State track and field teams on Saturday (May 25) at John McDonnell Field.
Stewart ran in the 3,000 meter steeplechase quarterfinals with a time of 10:12.13, finishing fourth in her heat and 9th overall, to advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time in her five year career. Last season she competed in the same event during the West Preliminary, where she ran a time of 10:36.71.
Sophomore Cecilia Fisher also ran in the steeplechase with a time of 10:51.22, to finish 37th.
Two women cleared the same height during the high jump at 1.76m/5-9.25, sophomore Sharie Enoe, tying for 19th, and junior Vanessa Mercera, tied for 24th. This was Enoe's first outdoor NCAA postseason appearance; she competed in the NCAA Division II indoor championship last season for New Mexico Highlands. Mercera matched her height from last season when she competed for Cloud County Community College in the NJCAA outdoor championship.
In the discus throw, sophomore Tamaiah Koonce finished in the top half of the standings, finishing 17th with a throw of 55.15m/180-11, a better finish during her second appearance in the meet. Junior Daisy Monie also competed, in her second event of the week, placing 44th with a distance of 47.83m/156-11.
After four days of competition, K-State qualifies with seven athletes for the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field on June 5-8. Alongside Stewart is senior Urte Bacianskaite in the women's heptathlon, senior Eugene Omalla in the men's 400 meter dash, senior Andrew White in the men's discus throw and the men's 4x400 relay team, freshman Nen Matlock, E. Omalla and seniors Jaimie Omalla and Kyle Gale.
