K-State Felled in Final Seconds by South Dakota

Nov 13, 2025 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – With 15 lead changes and seven ties, K-State played its second game in its first four of the season that came down to the wire. The visiting Coyotes of South Dakota used a three-pointer with under two seconds remaining to fell the Wildcats, 72-71, on Thursday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State (3-1) stayed in the game by tying the school record for free throws made, converting 32-of-39 (.821). The previous record was set on Dec. 6, 1979, against Colorado. The 32 made free throws are tied for the third-most by a team in the nation to date in the 2025-26 season.

The Wildcats had four players reach double figures and were led by junior guard Taryn Sides with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6 from the foul line and added eight rebounds.

Freshman guard Gina Garcia carded a career-high 14 points on a 12-of-12 effort from the foul line and a career-high six assists. Garcia became the fifth player in program history to shoot 12-of-12 or better from the free throw line and the first since Kindred Wesemann against South Dakota on Nov. 19, 2015.

Sophomore center Ramiya White registered a career-high 12 points including a career-best    6-of-8 from the foul line and four rebounds.

Senior guard Tess Heal tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

South Dakota (4-0) had five players in double figures and were paced by Tori Schlagel with 15 points.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie

On the biggest frustration from the game…
"Just the fact that we're not competing real hard, I think that probably as much as anything. And with a young team, you sit here and you go, is it because more is being put on them differently, whether it be different offenses being ran, and they get a little confused, so they slow down. But just, then it gets to some individual things. We got beat off the bounce all day long, individually. So that has nothing to do with being slowed down. That has to do with you competing one on one with that player. And so, I mean, I can go on and on. Offensively, I don't like anything we're doing right now. We got major issues offensively, we have zero attack right now. Today, we had to go to a high ball screen just to get any kind of offense right now, and obviously we didn't shoot the ball very well. But there's a lot of reasons why we're not shooting the basketball well."

On how difficult the quantity of fouls made it to produce any offensive rhythm…
"I don't know how many charge calls there were today, but there were a bunch. And agree or disagree, if there's somebody in there, there's some opportunities to kick out. So we're not seeing those things very well. We think [Brandie] Harrod is probably our best defender. So that put us in a tough spot. [Jordan] Speiser and [Aniya] Foy played extended minutes and we put her on a forward at one point. Foul trouble kind of limited what we could do. "

On Ramiya White's play tonight…
"I think [Ramiya White] improved in practice. She's getting better positioning down low and we've been asking her to do that. She had some advantages there today, and I thought she had a solid game."

On what the biggest change has to be mentally for the team…
"Most coaches are gonna say it starts with practice, right? And what I would tell you is that we're still not in a place in any area where I feel like we're competing together. We have moments, but we got a lot of players that are young. They're worried about their game, right? They're worried about what they have to do. They're worried about how they can play better individually. And I don't think it's uncommon, but when you get into practice it should be us five versus the other five, or a three-on-three drill, and that's not happening enough, and [Taryn Sides's] got to get better. She didn't start today because of some of that in practice. I mean, she's the returner, I expect more out of her in practice. I expect more of an influence in practice. It's not all the same, right? I expect [Aniya Foy], she's in year three. I expect more from [Tess Heal]. I expect more from those that have been there and done that, and right now, we're not getting enough of that."

On if the last play is the look they wanted…
"We wanted to get two opportunities, [Gina Garcia] or Taryn [Sides] coming off of action, and Taryn was coming the second. Tess [Heal] thought Gina had what we wanted. Gina just got too deep and got buried up underneath. It was okay."

FROM THE FLOOR
K-State Junior Guard Taryn Sides

On the biggest takeaway ending tonight's performance…
"I think the biggest takeaway is that we just have to buy into this team and what Coach [Jeff] Mittie's asking of us. I think we have to come into practice with a better attitude and mindset and want to learn and continue to grow together. I think it starts there and it will translate onto the court. I think this was a good reality check for us because I don't think that we've been going into practice with the right intentions."

On being able to find a consistent rhythm facing multiple fouls…
"Yeah, I think it is hard to get into a rhythm, but at the same time we have to adjust to how it's being officiated. I don't think we did a good job of that today because our strength is getting out and finding that rhythm and consistency. We weren't able to do that as much as we would have liked today."

On Gina Garcia's standout performance…
"I think Gina [Garcia] had a really good game today. She's played well this whole season really, but the last two or three games, she's really shined. I know she'll continue to get more comfortable and confident. She's doing such a good job for a freshman coming in. She's still learning a lot, but she's a lot of fun to play with. She just sees the floor so well and has a high basketball IQ."

On assuming her role as an upperclassman leader…
"I think that's what being a leader means. Getting the team to rally behind you, no matter the circumstances– especially after tonight's game. We need a really good practice tomorrow and the next day to prepare for Sunday, but it definitely falls on us and starts with us and then hopefully we can spread that to the rest of the team."

K-State Sophomore Center Ramiya White
On being the remaining forward in the final minutes of the game…
"I wouldn't say it is really tough. I just have to be here for my team and just do the best I can, and not be in foul trouble as well."

On a career high performance tonight…
"I think I played well. I could have rebounded more for my team to get more offensive possessions."
