Wildcats Return to Colleton River Collegiate
Feb 27, 2025 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a sixth-place finish last week in California, the Kansas State men's golf team travels to the opposite coast to compete in the Colleton River Collegiate, Sunday and Monday, at the par-72, 7,403-yard Dye Course of Colleton River Club in Bluffton, South Carolina.
Â
Now in the 13th year of the event, the Colleton River Collegiate has been contested every year since 2013, and the Wildcats have competed in the event on five occasions, including a third-place finish in 2022, second-place showing in 2023 and fourth-place finish a year ago.
Â
"We are looking forward to competing this weekend at Colleton River," said head coach Grant Robbins, whose team finished with the second-best round (269) and ninth-best 54-hole score (832) in school history at the event two years ago. "This is just a great all-around event. The golf course is fantastic and will provide a strong test, the field is really good and the support the tournament gets from the Colleton River community really makes it special. This year, the tournament is moving back to the Dye Course, which really puts a premium on your ball striking, and the finishing holes are some of the toughest you will find anywhere. We have had a good week of practice, and I know the guys are excited for the opportunity."
Â
Kansas State is part of the 16-team field that is hosted by Michigan State and includes Chattanooga, Cincinnati, East Tennessee State, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Memphis, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and No. 41 Wake Forest.
Â
The Wildcats will use the same scoring lineup they featured last week at The Prestige in seniors Nicklaus Mason, Kobe Valociek, Cooper Schultz and Ian McCrary as well as freshman Fionn Dobbin. Another freshman, Erik Sabelström Holmberg, will compete in a separate 36-hole individual tournament.
Â
A product of Shawnee, Kansas, Mason enters play this week ranked 34th in the latest National Collegiate Golf Rankings as he leads the team with a 70.17 scoring average – which currently ranks first in school history – and four top-10 finishes. Mason, who tied for 10th place at The Prestige, has two top-15 finishes in his three starts at the Colleton River Collegiate, tying for second place in 2023 at 10-under par 206 and 13th place last year at 7-under par 209. Making his 40th collegiate start, Mason currently ranks second in school history with a 72.09 career scoring average.
Â
Valociek is coming off a tie for fourth place last time out with a 54-hole score of 7-under par 206, which featured a career-low tying round of 66 over the first 18 holes. He ranks second on the team and fourth in school history with a 71.61 scoring average this season as the Virginia Tech transfer plays in the Colleton River Collegiate for the first time.
Â
Schultz returns to an event in which he has collected a pair of top-15 finishes. A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz tied for 13th place at 7-under par 209 in the 2022 edition of the Colleton River Collegiate, while he tied for seventh place last year at 9-under par 207. Set to make his 39th-career start, Schultz's current career average of 71.85 is tied for the top mark in school history.
Â
McCrary is making his eighth appearance this season and third straight in the scoring lineup as he holds a 73.61 scoring average. Dobbin ranks fourth on the team with a 72.43 scoring average over 14 rounds this season. Sabelström Holmberg enters play in South Carolina with a 74.00 scoring average and most recently tied for 21st place at The Prestige Individual tournament.
Â
A shotgun start begins play for the first 36 holes of the Colleton River Collegiate on Sunday at 8 a.m. (ET), while Monday's final round will utilize tee times beginning at 7:50 a.m. (ET). Live results can be viewed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.Â
