Cats Finish Eighth at Yale Invitational West
Mar 11, 2025 | Women's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – The Kansas State women's golf team could not maintain the momentum it created in the second round of the Yale Invitational West, as the 30th-ranked Wildcats fell three spots during Tuesday's final round to finish in eighth place at the par-72, 6,176-yard Norman Course of PGA WEST.
Â
The Wildcats, who recorded a round of 7-over par 295, finished the event with a 54-hole score of 5-over par 869.
Â
"We never really did anything particularly well or badly today. It was just a very frustrating day on the course," head coach Stew Burke said. "The putts just didn't drop, and in this company, you get caught and passed. We are disappointed, which isn't a bad thing. We will figure it out in the coming week and be ready to finish the regular season strong."
Â
Senior Carla Bernat led the way for the Wildcats by tying for sixth place, her seventh top-10 finish in nine events this year and 13th of her K-State career, the latter of which is tied for third in program history. A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat finished the event with a three-round total of 6-under par 210, her fifth 54-hole score of at least 5-under par this season. Bernat was in contention for the individual title entering the final round, but she fell four spots on Tuesday with just her sixth over-par score in 26 rounds this season, a 2-over par 74.
Â
K-State's best round on Tuesday came from junior Noa van Beek, who turned in a score of 1-over par 73. She improved six spots on the leaderboard during the final round to tie for 50th place at 12-over par 228.
Â
Senior Sophie Bert and freshman Nanami Nakashima tied for 31st place at 4-over par 220 as each went 2-over par 74 on Tuesday. Sophomore Alenka Navarro tied for 41st place at 7-over par 223 following a 2-over par 74 final-round score. Playing as an individual, sophomore Julia Ballester Barrio tied for 61st place with a three-round total of 17-over par 223.
Â
No. 15 North Carolina earned an 11-shot win with a 54-hole score of 31-under par 833, while 23rd-ranked Kansas finished second at 20-under par 844. Kansas' Lauren Clark improved three spots on the final day to claim the individual title at 12-under par 204 thanks to a final-round total of 6-under par 66.
Â
Kansas State has a week of practice next week prior to its next event, the Silicon Valley Showcase, March 24-25, at Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae, California.
