K-State Athletes Compete in Combined Events

Three athletes started the outdoor season early with heptathlon, decathlon

EMPORIA, Kan. – Three K-State combined events athletes started the track and field outdoor season early on Thursday-Friday (March 27-28) in the Emporia State Relays at Francis G. Welch Stadium.
 
Freshmen Tommaso Franze and Vera Gerasimova competed in their first collegiate decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, while senior Emil Uhlin competed for the first time since February 2024.
 
Competing in the women's heptathlon with 17 competitors, Gerasimova finished 7th with 4,650 points. She recorded a new shot put personal best, finishing 6th with a throw of 11.33m (37' 2 ¼").  She also recorded a top-5 finish in the long jump at 5.40m (17' 8 ¾") and in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.27.
 
Franze finished 9th in the men's decathlon with 4,950 points. He also gave two personal best performances in the shot put in 4th place at 11.16m (36 7 ½"). Other top marks included runner-up in the long jump at 7.03m (23' 0 ¾"), 3rd place in the discus throw with a distance of 31.46m (103' 2") and 51.87 in the 400 meters, finishing 4th.
 
Last competing in the decathlon during the 2023 Big 12 Championship in May 2023, Uhlin finished 11th with 4,092 points. He earned two wins in the field events, in the discus throw at 42.38m (139' 0"), a yard short of a new best, and in javelin at 51.90m (170' 3"). Uhlin finished runner-up in two more events, in the shot put with a throw of 12.93m (42' 5 ¼"), and 400 meters in 49.83 seconds.
 
K-State will officially start the outdoor season at the KT Woodman Classic on April 11-12 in Wichita, Kan., hosted by Wichita State.
