Four K-State Boats Medal, Including One Gold, at SIRA Championship
Apr 23, 2025 | Rowing
Wildcats walked away with one gold, two silver and one bronze medal
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The K-State women's rowing team had four boats medal in the annual Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship on Friday-Saturday (April 18-19) at Melton Hill Lake.
Â
"The team did a good job this weekend. Each boat is learning week to week, and the work we have done all year is starting to come together," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "Medals and winning are always fun, but it was really good to see the team continue to improve their technique and make the most of the water time we had in Tennessee."
Â
Racing was split between Friday and Saturday. Each boat competed in time trial heats to determine seeding for semifinals. Semifinals were followed by all boats competing in finals on Saturday. The 1v8+ and 2v8+ both earned silver medals in their respective categories and the 1v4+ earned a bronze medal. The 3v8+ also claimed a gold medal competing in the Women's Novice 8+ category.
Â
"These girls have showed up every single day and have given their one hundred percent every time. I can't emphasize enough how proud I am of them," freshman Mia Starnes said. "The awe and respect I have for them cannot be contained. Every seat, every position, is so valuable and contributes so much to the boat's overall success."
Â
The 3v8+, comprised of all novice rowers, competed with a lineup consisting of coxswain Starnes and freshmen Karlee Horyna, Abby Huonder, Abby Farr, Delaney Goshorn, Kendall Lane, Katelyn Colwell, Annika Janss and Lacy Miller. The boat completed the semis with a time of 7:42.94.
Â
"The semi-final, we went in focusing on ourselves, our overall connection, and performance as a boat. We started with a surge of adrenaline and built ahead quickly," Starnes said. "Our focus was to take it off hard for the first half to push ahead, but it wasn't about going all-out and burning out; it was about staying controlled and connected. And that's exactly what we did, and we did it well."
Â
On Saturday, the 3v8+ finished with a time of 7:15.94 to claim a gold medal.
Â
"My favorite race was the Grand Final. You could feel the boat's excitement and hear the silence right before the start. As we opened up the race, we took off powerful, confident and with a focus I've never seen before. The teams competing against us put up a good fight, and I knew we'd have to work to create that gap," Starnes said. "Calling the girls into a power shift, we set our focus on building that distance between the other boats and soared from there. Though filled with excitement, the girls managed to stay calm and connected, one of our recent goals to hold in the race."
Â
Crossing that finish line was surreal. I recall saying to them, 'Guys, we just took 1st at SIRAs,' Everyone was cheering, crying and splashing each other. It was such a memorable moment."
Â
The 2v8+ won their semifinal race with a time of 7:22.21. The boat competed with a lineup consisting of junior coxswain Leah Roane, senior Jayden Brandt, junior Makenzie Storm, sophomore Regan Reker, junior Emma Johnson, senior Madelyn Barrett, sophomores Anna Guhr and Harmony Leiker and freshman Bryn Pawlik.
Â
"For semifinals in the afternoon, we went in with the plan to take off and race it for the first 500 meters, and then if we were well ahead, bring the stroke rate down for the middle thousand, and then build it back up again in the finish. Â We especially wanted to practice our finish because as a boat we had never had a chance to race a finish together," Guhr said. "For our finish we really focused on staying clean, and sharp, and we also tried to get longer with our strokes, which were able to do, which felt really amazing as a boat. We ended up finishing with boat lengths of water between us and the other boats."
Â
Saturday, the boat competed in the 'A' final, where they earned a silver medal with a final time of  7:05.09.
Â
"For Saturday, we knew it was going to be a tight race, but we went in with the mindset that we are going to give it our best, and finish proud of what we accomplished, which we did," Guhr said. "Our start felt really good, and though we were down on the Louisville boat we made some pretty significant moves on that boat throughout the race, and we were walking back up on in it in the finish and we were able to come away with a silver medal."
Â
The 1v8+ competed in semifinals on Saturday morning, winning their semi with a time of 6:51.56.
Â
"Our time trial was the first time this boat had done more than 500 meters of race pace together, but it was a low stress environment and a great opportunity to figure out the kinks and figure out what to work on for semis and finals," senior Gracyn McClain said. "Semis was that 'ah ha' moment that you look for in rowing where everything flows, you only hear the coxswain and the click of the oars, and the hardest thing you've ever done feels effortless. Being able to ride that high and confidence into finals was great. We knew we had more to give than in the semis and we were excited."
Â
It was a tough race just like last year, and just like last year it was incredibly gratifying to cross the finish line knowing you put everything you had into it. Of course, you always want first place, but in rowing (especially in a new lineup) a clean, hard fought, race can be just as rewarding."
Â
The 1v8+ competed with a lineup consisting of junior coxswain Kiersten Schmalz, seniors Rachel Harman and Madison Koller, juniors Grace Hall and Sylvia Cunningham, McClain, sophomore Izzy Ross and seniors Symone Simmons and Kay Pakkebier.
Â
"This weekend is one of those prime examples of 'when one boat wins, we all win.' It was great getting to feed off of the energy of the other boats as they started winning things and being able to call SIRAS a success as a whole team is way bigger than being able to call it a success for my individual boat," McClain said. Â
Â
In Saturday's final race they claimed a silver medal time of 7:05.79.
Â
"It's a weird feeling trying to take in all of the last moments of this chapter of my life while also being incredibly excited for the next chapter and everything it holds. The whole weekend was normal until we docked after our finals race and suddenly it hit me, I will never race on this course again, this is it, it's coming to an end and I can't slow it down," McClain said. "The senior banquet will be that final "it's happening" moment and I know I'll cry."
Â
Competing with a lineup of junior coxswain Kennedy Loyd, junior Ellie Erwin, senior Halle Fee, sophomore Lorelei Harris and junior Bianca Wollmeister, the 1v4+ finished their semifinal race with a time of 7:56.70, earning a spot in Saturday's 'A' final.
Â
"Starting the weekend with a new lineup was crucial to demonstrate our ability to adapt. We did not start the weekend with our most efficient time, but we got better with each race," Wollmeister said. "It was very clear to see our push at the 1000m during semis and similar again with the final where we held on to high point and kept pushing to the end. For sure the greatest feeling during the A final. I believe our coxswain did an amazing job bringing us home during the final."
Â
Building on Saturday's momentum from the whole team, the boat went on to earn a bronze medal racing their final with a time of 7:32.65.
Â
"Being a senior this far into the semester is a combination of happiness and some bitter feelings of sadness. And that combination becomes a great fuel to finish the season stronger and looking forward to younger teammates stepping up and making this team even better," Wollmeister said.
Â
The 2v4+ raced in the 1v4+ event, competing with a lineup consisting of sophomore coxswain Regan Ahlers, junior Kyla Traub, sophomore Sienna Pargiter-Walker, junior Ava Werner and senior Grace Hendrickson.
Â
The crew came in 4th place in their semifinal with a time of 8:04.47. Competing in Saturday's 'B' final, the boat recorded a final time of 7:59.09.
Â
"I'm really proud of the work my boat put in this weekend, and the cohesion we've been able to create, as this was our first time racing in this lineup," Guhr said. "I'm also really proud of our team overall, as I know everyone gave their best this weekend, and the team was able to leave with four medals to show for it!"
Â
The Wildcats will take a weekend off before the last regular season on Saturday (May 3) with the annual Sunflower Showdown against Kansas in Kansas City, Kan., at Wyandotte County Lake.
Â
"KU is always an exciting and personal race. We all, as team, look forward to bringing the cup back, and we are ready to give our all again," Wollmeister said.
Â
"We have 2 weeks to perfect this lineup, 2 weeks to shave off seconds and 2 weeks to go to work. I'm excited to see what we put together in that time and then get to test it out," McClain said. "KU is competitive and fast, it will be a good race, the goal is to come home with the cup, do or die."
