Cowboys Take Sunday Doubleheader
Apr 06, 2025 | Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State claimed both games of a Sunday doubleheader with No. 22 K-State at O'Brate Stadium, taking the middle game 7-0 before a 10-2 win in the series finale.
"Frustrating day for our program," said seventh-year head coach Pete Hughes. "We didn't pitch, play defense, or hit like we were capable."
The Wildcats, who moved to 20-11 overall and 8-4 in Big 12 play, were held to two runs on the day as the Cowboys (15-14, 4-6 Big 12) handed the Cats their first series loss of the season.
"We all played a part in today's losses, and I hold myself accountable. I made a defensive decision that really hurt us. We'll be better. I'll be better," added Hughes.
"I do know this, our kids, they are tough and resilient and can handle the adversity that we've been dealt. A college baseball season is about managing the highs and lows. The highs are fun and easy, but the lows are only for the tough and we are K-State tough."
Seven different Wildcats registered hit on the day, led by two in Game 1 by freshman Donte Lewis – his four game with two or more hits.
AJ Evasco recorded a game-tying home run in the third inning of Game 2. The true freshman is now one of four players to have six or more home runs on the year.
GAME 1: OKLAHOMA STATE 7, K-STATE 0
Nolan Schubart, the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, spotted Quevedo for a solo homer in the opening frame.
OSU expanded on its lead, 6-0, with the help of a three-run blast from Kolin Ritchie in the fourth.
The Wildcats were left without a hit through five innings, as OSU's starter Sean Youngerman retired 17 consecutive batters with eight strikeouts.
Freshman Donte Lewis singled into left field to break up Youngerman's perfect game attempt, but a chopper to second kept momentum in favor of OSU.
K-State's best look to scoring came in the eighth when designated hitter Sam Flores hit through the left side and moved into scoring position on Lewis' second hit of the game. The duo advanced 90-feet on the shortstop's attempt to make the play at first but were left stranded as Youngerman punched out his 11th batter of the game.
INSIDE THE BOX (Game 1)
OSU tagged two runs to the board in the first inning, led by an RBI single from Colin Brueggemann.
After 11 scoreless innings on Saturday, K-State broke through with a two-out, two-run shot to right field by freshman AJ Evasco – his sixth of the season.
The Cowboys broke up the 2-2 tie and scored eight unanswered runs in a three-inning span, highlighted by six in the sixth.
