LA QUINTA, Calif. – The Kansas State women's golf team was unable to stay in contention during the final round of the Yale Invitational West on Tuesday, as the Wildcats finished in fourth place at the par-72, 6,304-yard Nicklaus Course at PGA WEST.
K-State, which carded a final-round total of 15-over par 303, finished the event with a 54-hole score of 9-over par 873.
"Today was obviously disappointing, however I cannot fault the effort and trying to get something going throughout the round," head coach Stew Burke said. "Sometimes you have runs like these. However, the ultimate responsibility falls on me to make sure that it does not happen again. I am disappointed for the ladies, but it has been a long time since we played like this. I know as a group we will make the correct adjustments moving forward."
K-State was led during the event by sophomore Nanami Nakashima, who finished in 18th place at 3-over par 219 following a round of 5-over par 77 on Tuesday. It was Nakashima's sixth top-20 finish in eight events this season.
Finishing one shot back and in a tie for 19th place was another sophomore, Kelsey Chen, who carded a final-round total of 4-over par 76 en route to her sixth top-20 finish this season. Freshman Casey Kang, who made her first appearance in the scoring lineup this spring, matched Chen's final-round score and tied for 25th place at 6-over par 222.
Senior Noa van Beek finished in 29th place at 10-over par 226 after entering the final round at even par over the first 36 holes.
Freshman Keen Visavapattamawan had the best round of the day for the Wildcats at 2-over par 74. She finished in a tie for 39th place at 14-over par 230.
No. 10 Pepperdine earned a two-shot victory at 15-over par 849, topping No. 38 Kansas. The Jayhawks had the top individual in Lyla Louderbaugh, who won by three shots at 9-under par 207.
Next action for the Wildcats is March 20-22 when they co-host the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.
