The Wildcats went 1-2 in three straight road matches
STILLWATER, Okla.- The K-State women's tennis team competed in its first ranked match up of the season on Saturday (March 14) against #27 Oklahoma State at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The Wildcats wrap up a three-match road series at 1-2.
#53 K-State (5-6, 2-3 Big 12) started the match 1-0 due to forfeits, not enough eligible players from #27 Oklahoma State (7-5, 4-1 Big 12). Even with an advantage in doubles play, only needing to secure one more victory, the Wildcats could not take advantage of it, falling in a consecutive match against a ranked opponent.
Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova won via forfeit on the no. 3 doubles court.
In the no. 1 spot, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav faced a consecutive ranked pair in #20 Anastasiya Komar and Rose Marie Nijkamp. The two teams scored back and forth leading to a tiebreaker where the Chogsomjav sisters fell just short at 6-7 (3-7), their first tiebreaker of the spring.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska faced Olivia Lincer and Luca Udvardy in the no. 2 position where they also kept a tight match but ultimately lost at 4-6.
To start singles play, freshman Addison Renfro secured an automatic win in the no. 6 spot as the Cowgirls forfeit the court.
Two Wildcats faced ranked opponents, their first of conference play. Maralgoo battled against #53 Lincer in the no. 1 position where she kept it close in the first set but started to lose steam in the next, falling 4-6, 2-6. Maralgoo is now 0-3 in ranked match ups this spring.
In the no. 4 spot, Smolinska faced #22 Nijkamp, her first ranked battle of the year. Similarly, she went back and forth in the first set at 4-6 but couldn't maintain the momentum, losing 4-6, 1-6.
Two courts went unfinished, Martaa in the no. 2 position and Rustemova in the no. 5 spot. Facing Komar for the second time during the match, Martaa dropped the first set at 3-6 and was down by just two points in the next before going unfinished at 3-6, 2-4.
Rustemova competed in the no. 5 court for the first time since week one against Clemson on January 30. Facing Melissa Ercan, she started with a 3-6 decision in the first set but was 1-2 in the next set before stoppage.
The Wildcats will play back at home in Manhattan next week, first against #44 Baylor (8-4, 4-1 Big 12) on Friday, March 20, and then face #19 TCU (10-2, 4-1 Big 12) on Sunday, March 22.
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On the opportunity to bounce back with another road win…
"Pretty disappointing result today. We had a great opportunity to really propel our season and we didn't take it. It's great we had some minor success last weekend but nothing replaces hard work and belief."
On being able to play back home in Manhattan next…
"I'm glad we can finally play at home again after two weeks straight on the road. I promise the product that comes out on the court next week will be better than our last two matches."
