
K-State Drops Last Big 12 Road Match, 4-1 at Houston

The Wildcats return home for a midweek doubleheader against Chicago State
HOUSTON, Texas- The K-State women's tennis team competed in one last conference road match of the regular season on Sunday (April 5) against Houston at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility as the Wildcats dropped a third consecutive match with a 4-1 decision.
K-State (5-12, 2-9) gave up a fourth straight doubles point while battling #41 Houston (16-5, 6-5 Big 12) before starting to battle back in singles play with one victory and two matches heading to three sets, but it wasn't enough.
Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova dropped another match in the no. 2 court, this time facing Petja Drame and Elizaveta Morozova in a 3-6 loss. Freshman Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska put up more of a fight versus Valeriia Krokhotina and Iva Sepa but they could not come out with a win, 4-6 in the no. 3 spot.
Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, ranked #80 in doubles play, went unfinished in a consecutive match, going back and forth in the no. 1 position against the Cougars' Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli at 5-6.
Maralgoo clinched the point for the Wildcats with her first victory since March 22 against TCU. Facing Morozova in the no. 1 court she maintained her composure to complete a sweep in straight sets at 6-3, 6-3. Going up against Morozova who had a 8-5 record going into the match, Maralgoo is now 6-6 in the no. 1 spot.
All three of the Cats' losses were in similar scoring straight sets in the no. 3-5 matches. Rustemova showed consistency in the no. 5 spot battling Drame as she put up three points in both sets but couldn't get the upper hand, coming up short 3-6, 3-6.
Diana faced Sepa in the no. 4 position where she was unable to string together enough points, just putting together two points in both sets, falling 2-6, 2-6. Kyselova dropped a straight sets match against Krokhotina in the no. 3 court scoring just one point a set in a 1-6, 1-6 loss.
Martaa started off with a win in the first set over Zeghlouli in the no. 2 spot but started to fall behind in the next as the match went unfinished at 6-3, 2-5.
Bernovich split two sets versus Schouten in the no. 6 position, losing the first but then took charge in the second set winning with a similar score, the match at 3-6, 6-3 by stoppage time.
The Wildcats added a midweek doubleheader at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium against Chicago State (1-20, 1-4 NEC) on Wednesday (April 8) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. K-State will then wrap up the Big 12 regular season at home on April 10 against Iowa State before facing #37 Kansas on April 12.
