K-State Set to Host Powercat Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a seventh-place finish against a tough 16-team field its last time out, the Kansas State women's golf team looks to defend its home turf when the Wildcats host the Powercat Classic, Monday and Tuesday, at the par-72, 6,503-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.

This is the third-straight season that K-State will host on its home course in what was called the Powercat Invitational the previous two seasons, events that the Wildcats earned both the team and individual titles. In 2024, K-State picked up a 17-shot victory with a 54-hole score of 1-under par 860, while Carla Bernat won the individual title at 8-under par 208. Last season, the Wildcats claimed a 27-shot win at 13-over par 877 with Nanami Nakashima winning the individual crown at 5-under 211.

"We are looking forward to playing at home this week," head coach Stew Burke said. "Colbert Hills is in incredible condition, and we love to play in front of our home fans. The ladies are coming off of a good week in Oklahoma, but they know how important it is to stay focused and play well to keep the momentum going. We have a great blend of youth and experience on a roster and lean a little more towards our underclassmen in our lineup. What they lack in experience, they certainly make up for in desire to succeed, hard work and passion to represent K-State. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Colbert Hills on Monday and Tuesday."

K-State welcomes 11 other teams to Manhattan in Bethune-Cookman, Central Arkansas, Cincinnati, Creighton, Incarnate Word, Kennesaw State, Loyola Chicago, Missouri-St. Louis, Monmouth, South Dakota State and Tarleton State.

The Wildcats will utilize the scoring lineup of a pair of juniors in Nakashima and Kelsey Chen, two sophomores in Stalee Fields and Keen Visavapattamawan and freshman Amy Wang. Additionally, senior Julia Ballester Barrio, sophomore Casey Kang and freshman Mia Ingham will compete as individuals.

Nakashima, a native of Kani, Japan, leads a group of four golfers that have played in the first two events with a 70.83 scoring average. She earned a tie for 18th place earlier this week at the Schooner Fall Classic with a 54-hole score of 3-under par 207, which tied for the 11th-lowest 54-hole score in school history. She carded a 5-under par 65 in the final round, tied for the fourth-lowest round in school history.

Nakashima enters the event with a career scoring average of 73.05 to currently rank second in school history.

Chen is coming off a tie for 28th place earlier this week thanks to a career-low tying round of 66 on moving day, which lowered her season scoring average to 74.33. In last year's home event, the Dalian, China, native finished in third place at 7-over par 223.

Fields is coming off a career-low 54-hole score of 4-under par 206, tying for the seventh-best three-round total in program history. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Fields produced a second-round score of 4-under par 66, the best of her career. She enters the home event with a 73.00 scoring average over six rounds this season.

A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Visavapattamawan tied for 33rd in the Schooner Fall Classic while playing as an individual, totaling a 54-hole score of 1-over par 211. She tied her career-low 54-hole and single-round scores, the latter being a 69 in the opening round.

Wang has seen time in each of the first two events of her rookie season, averaging 73.83 strokes over her six rounds. The best finish of the two was a 44th-place showing in the season-opening Annika Intercollegiate.

Ballester Barrio is making her fourth-straight appearance at Colbert Hills with her best finish being 15th place two years ago after a score of 7-over par 223. Kang is making her first start of the season after posting a 75.95 scoring average over 19 rounds during her freshman campaign. Ingham is competing in a second-straight event as she was part of the scoring lineup at the Schooner Fall Classic, recording a score of 9-over par 219.

The Powercat Classic begins on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., with continuous play for the first two rounds, and Tuesday's final round will also carry an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start.
