Jayson Gee At A Glance
Jayson Gee, a veteran coach who has more than 35 years of coaching experience at the Division I and II levels, including two head coaching stints, joined the K-State coaching staff in the summer of 2025 as a character coach for head coach Jerome Tang. Gee works for the Nations of Coaches organization which serves as a resource to help coaches handle the pressures of their position.
Gee won 202 games in his 12 seasons as a head coach at his alma mater Division II Charleston (1996-2003) and Longwood (2013-18) to go along several notable assistant coaching stints. In addition to his head coaching stints, he has been an assistant and/or associate head coach at 6 different schools, including Ohio (1993-96), St. Bonaventure (2003-06), Cleveland State (2006-13), Winthrop (2018-19), Western Carolina (2021-24) and Coastal Carolina (2024-25).
Gee arrives at K-State after spending the last 4 seasons with head coach Justin Gray as an associate head coach at Western Carolina (2021-24) and Coastal Carolina (2024-25). The Catamounts won 40 games during the staff’s last 2 seasons, including 22 in 2023-24, before the move to join the Chanticleers in 2024.
Prior to joining Gray at Western Carolina and Coastal Carolina, Gee worked 2 seasons at current Big 12 member Cincinnati (2019-21) under head coach John Brannen. The Bearcats won 20 games in 2019-20 and shared the AAC regular season championship with a 13-5 mark before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team went 12-11 during the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign.
Gee came to Cincinnati after one season as associate head coach under Pat Kelsey at Winthrop, where he was part of an Eagles squad that won 18 games. He made the move to Winthrop from Longwood, where he was the Lancers’ head coach from 2013-18.
Gee helped build the Cleveland State program under head coach Gary Waters from 2006-13, which included 3 NIT appearances (2008, 2011, 2012) and a trip to the round of 32 of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Vikings won 20 or more games 4 times in his 7-year stint, including 27 wins and a tie for the Horizon League regular-season title in 2010-11.
Gee was a highly successful head coach at Division II Charleston from 1996-2003, leading his alma mater to a 160-53 (.751) overall record, including a 98-33 (.748) mark in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). He guided the Golden Eagles to 2 regular season conference championships (1999-2000 and 2000-01), 2 conference tournament championships (1999 and 2001) and 4 consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002).
Gee left Charleston in 2003-04 to be an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure.
Gee got his coaching start at Youngstown State under John Stroia in 1989-90. He spent 4 seasons (1989-93) with the Penguins before moving onto Ohio to join head coach Larry Hunter’s staff in 1993-94. The Bobcats won 65 games during his 3-year stint from 1993-96, including 25 wins, the MAC regular-season and tournament titles and a trip to the 1994 NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his coaching prowess, Gee is a respected writer, including the author of “The Battle for Brandon,” a book that is a dramatic and compelling story about the Gee family’s courageous fight against son Brandon’s child onset paranoid schizophrenia.
The Gee family also worked with mass media veteran Chad Bonham to transform the book into a documentary, “The Miracle Comeback of Brandon G” that has received endorsements from Emmy Nominated and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Jennifer Garner, WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings and former Pittsburgh Steeler Antwaan Randle El.
Gee was one of 18 coaches selected for the 2008 ACE (Achieving Coaching Excellence) Program in Indianapolis. Sponsored by the NCAA Black Coaches and Administrators Council, the ACE Program prepares minority collegiate coaches for success as future head coaches.
A native of Springfield, Ohio, Gee played four years at the University of Charleston in Charleston, W. Va., where he helped the Golden Eagles to a 92-30 record, including a 30-5 mark as a sophomore. A two-year team captain, he finished his college career ranking third in both rebounds (844) and games played (122). He was inducted into the Charleston Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003 after previously being inducted into the Springfield South High School Hall of Fame in 2000.
Gee earned his bachelor’s degree in social science education from Charleston in 1988 before obtaining a Master’s in Sport Science and Administration from Ohio University in 2003.
Gee and his wife, Lynette, have three sons (Terrence, Brandon and Bryan) and a daughter (Briana).
