Wildcats Fall to No. 3 Baylor in Big 12 Semis

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas State's run in the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship came to an end Friday as third-ranked and top-seeded Baylor proved to be too much for the Wildcats in an 86-53 loss in semifinal action at Municipal Auditorium.
With the loss, the Wildcats dropped to 21-10 on the season and will await their NCAA Tournament seeding and site location which will be announced on Monday.
Kelsey Hill led the way for K-State with 14 points, which included four three-point makes, while Taelor Karr pitched in 13. Brittany Chambers was held to just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting Friday, while Jalana Childs played just three minutes in the game and did not record any baskets.
The Bears (30-2) muscled their way to 52 rebounds in the game, including 22 on the offensive end of the floor, while four players scored in double figures. Brittney Griner led the way with a game-high 21 points. The Wildcats shot 35 percent in the contest (20-of-57) but did connect on 44 percent off their three-point field goals (11-of-25).
Baylor jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the contest before a deep Chambers three cut the lead in half. The Bears then went on a 9-0 run to up the margin to double digits and took a 20-5 advantage with 11:05 remaining.
The Cats pulled to within nine at 28-19 following two Hill three-pointers at the six-minute mark, but Odyssey Sims hit on three consecutive long-range three's to give the Bears a 34-19 lead with 4:42 left. That 15-point margin would last until the end of the half as the two teams each scored seven points in the final four minutes with Baylor holding a 41-26 advantage.
K-State shot 35 percent in the opening 20 minutes while Baylor held the advantage in rebounds, 20-12. Hill paced the Cats with nine first-half points, while the Bears were led by three players in double figures. The Cats connected on 7-of-13 three-pointers in the first half but were just 2-of-13 inside the arc.
Baylor extended its lead to 55-32 in the first four minutes of the second half and opened on a 21-6 run. The Bears' largest lead in the game was 38 at 84-46 as K-State could not generate much offense. The Cats managed to score seven of the game's final 10 points to close out the scoring.
