MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will wrap up their regular season competition on Friday, October 13, as they travel to Peoria, Illinois to compete in the Bradley Pink Classic. The men's race will navigate through Newman Golf Course's 8k route at 3:15 p.m., with the women following at 4 p.m. in the 6k race.
The Wildcat women will enter seven runners in Friday's race, including senior Kayla Doll, junior Emma Wren, sophomores Sydney Collins and Erin Lee and freshmen Cara Melgares, Victoria Robinson and Kassidy Johnson. Wren set a career best at the Cowboy Jamboree with a 25th place finish at 21:57.8, marking the 10th fastest finish at the course in K-State history.
"I think it would be good for them to improve on what they did in Oklahoma," head coach Ryun Godfrey spoke of the women's team. "Our goal is to close the gap between our runners and improve on what we have done in the past."
The men's team will enter 11 runners between the Bradley "red" and "white" races, as they are led by a group of six seniors, including Brett Bachman, Jeff Bachman, Colton Donahue, Sam Oxandale, Lukas Koch and Bryan Zack. Donahue has led the Wildcats throughout this season, after running a season best 25:21.8 at the Cowboy Jamboree.
"The guys have trained hard this season," Godfrey said. "I think for them [the men's team], it's about running a hard race and feeling comfortable with where they are. The team likes to compare their times from year-to-year, so I would like to see them improve from last year and this season."
Both Wildcat teams earned USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Rankings following hard-fought seventh (men's) and eighth (women's) team finishes at the Cowboy Jamboree Invitational on September 30. The strong showing resulted in both teams earning their first USTFCCCA ranking of the year, as the women's team earning the ninth standing in the rankings, and the men's team earning the 14th ranking.
The Wildcats began racing at the Bradley Pink Classic in recent years, with Donahue holding the K-State men's 8k course record of 24:30 set in 2015, while Martina Tresch set the K-State women's 6k course record in 2010 with a time of 20:24. There are seven active K-State runners that hold top-10 K-State marks at the course, including Donahue, Zack, Koch, Oxandale, Jeff Bachman, Brett Bachman, and Joe Gorthy.
Following Friday's meet at Bradley, the Wildcats will prepare for the Big 12 Championships on October 30 in Round Rock, Texas. Last season, the K-State men's team placed eighth overall, and the women's team placed 10th.
