Wildcats to Conclude Fall Racing Season

Oct 19, 2017 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will conclude their Fall racing schedule on Sunday, as they travel an hour and a half east to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Jayhawk Jamboree on the Kansas River. Racing will begin at 11:00 a.m., with festivities taking place all day at Burcham Park.

K-State will begin the day with five boats in the women's varsity 4 race that begins at 11:15 a.m. CT, followed by one boat in the women's novice 8 at 12:30 p.m. CT, two boats in the women's novice 4 at 2:00 p.m. CT, and will cap off the jamboree with three boats in the women's varsity 8 race at 2:45 p.m. CT.

"I think they're in good shape for where we want to be at this time of the year," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the varsity boats. "It's the sharpness and aggression that I want to see this time. We talked about it and we worked on it, now let's see if we can do it when we are racing."

Two weeks ago at the Head of the Oklahoma the varsity boats fared well, with sixth and ninth-place finishes in the varsity 8 and varsity 4 races. The novice boats brought home two golds from the event, winning both the novice 4 and novice 8 races. For a full recap and results from the Head of the Oklahoma, click here.

"The novice races can be a bit unpredictable, but they did a good job and they did what we would have liked for them to have done," Sweeney said of the novice team after their performance at the Head of the Oklahoma.

The Jayhawk Jamboree is a head race that uses a time-trial format, meaning each team will launch individually and race against the clock, with the fastest time winning the event. The boats will launch from Burcham Park and will race down the Kansas River. Among the competitors, K-State will see Division I competition from Kansas, Oklahoma, Tulsa, Iowa, Creighton and Wichita State, among others.

Much like the Head of the Oklahoma regatta, the Jayhawk Jamboree serves as a competitive training experience for the Wildcats, as they prepare for the upcoming spring season. Following Sunday's competition, the team will not compete until March 3, 2018 when they travel Oklahoma City to take on the Oklahoma Sooners.

Last year, the Wildcats won the women's novice 8 event, and brought home a bronze medal in the collegiate women's 4 event.
