Wildcats Earn Three Medals to Conclude Hard-Fought Fall Racing Season
Oct 22, 2017 | Rowing
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team concluded their fall racing schedule on Sunday at the Jayhawk Jamboree with a series top finishes, placing within the top-three in four of the five events, including a second-place finish in the women's Varsity 8+ 300m sprint, that came down to a showdown against Oklahoma in the finals.
Â
The Wildcats closed out the final event of their fall season with an exciting finish in the women's varsity 8+ race, qualifying all three K-State boats into the Varsity 8+ 300m sprints, a single elimination tournament-style event. In the sprints, the V8A ousted the Oklahoma C boat to make it to the event finals, before narrowly falling to the Oklahoma A boat. The Wildcats' V8A boat was made up of coxswain Samantha Scott, rowers Marissa Butrum, Mikaela Bennett, Grace Reilly, Elaina Grantham, Mattie Warner, Kennedy Felice, Logan Frost and Lauren Costello.
Â
"Coming off the Oklahoma race [on Oct. 7], we had an idea of what we wanted to work for and I'm pleased with how all of the boats worked and how they put it into practice," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team's performances. "The fact that all three made it into the sprints was nice for them. I thought that the first eight did a very good job of handling the sprint race and making it to the finals."
Â
The exciting finish was the capstone to an impressive day for the Wildcats, as K-State began the day with five boats in the women's varsity 4+ race, that saw two boats finish in the top-15 of a crowded field, including a ninth-place finish with a time of 14:25.59. The K-State B boat came through with a time of 14:44.55, finishing 15th overall.
Â
The Wildcats earned two medals between the women's Novice 8+ and women's Novice 4+ races, as the boat coxed by Victoria Iacovetti and rowed by Leah Gaines, Aubrey Gilchrist, Macy Flory and Skylar Gottschalk, finished first overall with a time of 15:49.14. The Wildcats pushed across a second boat shortly after, finishing third overall in 16:07.22. In the women's Novice 8+, the novice boat consisting of coxswain Maddi Breault and rowers Abbey Hebbert, Caroline Geither, Jazzmyn Pekarek, Taylor Hartman, Leah Gaines, Aubrey Gilchrist, Emma Witter and Skylar Gottschalk, earned a silver medal in the event, finishing with a time of 13:56.80.
Â
"They [novice boats] are making progress, they are learning they will hopefully continue to improve and learn from each race, and that's what we expect them to do," Sweeney said.
Â
Sunday's race marked the last of the fall season for the Wildcats as the team continues to prepare for the upcoming spring race season. K-State will compete in their first spring meet on Saturday, March 3, 2018 against Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
