Wildcats Open Spring Rowing Season with Oklahoma Scrimmage

Mar 07, 2018 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Women's Rowing team will make their 2018 season debut on Saturday, as the team travels to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to scrimmage against the University of Oklahoma on the Oklahoma River.

Saturday's scrimmage against Oklahoma marks the first of three competitions in the month of March, as the team prepares for the Big 12 Championship on May 12-13. Racing will begin tentatively at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, as the team gets their first feel of competition since a strong performance at the Jayhawk Jamboree on October 22.

"The women have done a good job of getting fit. They have worked really hard. We have pushed them. The thing that I would want for them is to get the water time so they can learn to feel and move the boats efficiently," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team. "I am just looking forward to being able to get [the team] out on the water to see what we have got."

Among the boats competing on Saturday, the Wildcats will have three Varsity 8+'s and two Varsity 4+'s competing against their opposite numbers. The racing experience gives the team a chance to work on mechanics and show their hard work during the winter season, while facing off against a conference opponent.

"We have an idea of who should be in what seat, but we also know we are not up to speed yet. We will get faster during the season by being on the water. That is sort of the confidence side of it, as we know we will get faster."

Saturday's outing on the Oklahoma River will be the second time in the 2017-18 season that the Wildcats have raced on the Oklahoma River, after competing at the Head of the Oklahoma on October 7, 2017. Their last outing was highlighted by a pair of victories in the women's novice 4+ and women's novice 8+ races and competitive races throughout the team.

Since their last showing at the Jayhawk Jamboree in the fall, the Wildcats have put in a solid winters training, including a trip to Austin, Texas for Winter Camp. During the training, the rowers looked to get stronger from their performances in the fall and continue to improve going into the spring season.

Following Saturday's scrimmage with Oklahoma, the Wildcats will take a trip out west to compete at the Hornet Invitational from March 17-18 in Sacramento, California. The Wildcats will remain in the state of California for the following week, as the team will compete in the San Diego Crew Classic on March 24-25 in San Diego, California.

"Spring camp is going to be a great week, hopefully we get some good water. That should be the start of where we really begin to go faster, week by week," Sweeney said.
