Nov 10, 2017 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State opened its 50th season of intercollegiate women's basketball on Friday night with a 74-49 win over Stephen F. Austin at Bramlage Coliseum. K-State has now won eight straight home openers and 24 of its last 26.

The Wildcats were led by senior forward Kaylee Page with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Page also filled in her stat line with seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal.

Joining Page in double figures were junior guard Kayla Goth and freshman guard Rachel Ranke with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Goth added five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, while Ranke registered seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals in her career debut.

As a team, K-State finished the night with nine blocked shots and 13 steals. This is the 11th time K-State has registered 20 or more blocks and steals in a game under head coach Jeff Mittie and first time since Jan. 13, 2016, against Oklahoma State. Overall, the Wildcats forced 20 SFA turnovers, resulting in a 20-3 advantage in points off turnovers.

Stephen F. Austin was led by by Stevi Parker with nine points and 11 rebounds.

K-State broke open a close first quarter with a 7-0 run, as the freshman backcourt pair of Ranke and Cymone Goodrich scored four and three points, respectively, to give the Wildcats a 17-11 lead with 1:33 remaining.

A Peyton Williams layup and two Shaelyn Martin free throws to close the opening quarter of the season gave K-State a 21-15 lead. Martin would finish the game with nine points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. With her six assists, Martin moved into 12th on the K-State career assists list with 310.

In the second quarter, K-State used an 8-3 run to build a 29-20 lead with 3:56 to play. Back-to-back layups from freshman Mary Lakes and Martin boosted K-State into a 33-23 lead with 2:03 remaining in the first half. The Ladyjacks closed the half with five made free throws to pull to within nine, 37-28, at the half.

K-State shot 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from the floor in the opening half and were aided by a 13-of-19 performance from the free throw line in the first half. K-State held SFA to 28.1 percent (9-of-32) shooting, with six of those misses coming on K-State blocked shots.

What They Said

Kansas State Head Coach Jeff Mittie

On the game…
"I liked our attack early I felt like we were leaving some points on the floor early but I also felt like if we kept our attack we will be fine. We were getting good looks and getting to the free throw line. Those were two things we had to do to win this game. I felt like our team stayed fairly disciplined for the most part tonight."

On making adjustments at halftime…
"We really did not talk to them long at halftime we gave them a little breather. We felt pretty good about things and reemphasized some things. Mostly telling our centers they could not foul. We emphasized to the guards that it was also their fault too. They were getting to the middle of the floor really easy."

On how the team has embraced their roles…
"We have had a different fall because of the amount of injuries. We haven't really had the chance to sync everybody into their roles. They had to accept whatever role is needed. Especially tonight we lost Goodrich and we didn't want to play Shaelyn (Martin) too much and we wanted to give Peyton (Williams) some rest knowing her workload. We would also like to keep (Kayla) Goth as fresh as possible but those things are not necessarily becoming easy to do."

K-State Senior Guard/Forward Shaelyn Martin
On how it felt to be back on the floor...
"It was a great feeling to get back on the floor with my teammates. It has been five and a half weeks with them as a group. Anything that I can do to raise the energy on the floor. I knew if I could get a charge early in this game then the energy would swing our way and I was able to do that."

K-State Senior Forward Kaylee Page
On offense..
"I am just trying to let the offense come to me. Then coach told me if they have their feet inside the 3 point line to shoot the ball. So I have been trying to live by that rule, even though in practice I still get yelled for not doing that. I am just trying to be a leader on the court and help the offense flow and get everyone involved. Just whatever we need."

On the freshmen...
"It has just been so fun to see them grow even from summer to when we were in Europe to now. It is fun to have them look at me as a leader in huddles and during the game.

Stephen F. Austin Head Coach Mark Kellogg
On forward Stevi Parker's performance…
"She did very well as the team did not. She is our best player and an all-conference kid for us. We expect her to get a lot of rebounds and score a lot of points for us. If she had shot a little bit better I think she would have played a little better. She rebounded about as well as she normally does."

On K-State's length…
"Their length bothers us. We do not get to replicate that in practice because we do not have their length. We knew they were going to play that zone, but we thought we were prepared for it. We did not make shots, we did not move the ball, and we got stagnant. That is probably to credit to them. They extended the zone a little bit and got us uncomfortable. We played around the three-point line all night, we never got below the zone and I think their length had something to do with that."

On forward Kaylee Page's performance…
"She did exactly what we thought she could do. I thought it was the third quarter when she really got going. We had a couple free throws to cut it to eight or nine, and I thought 'here we go a little bit,' and then she went down and shot a dagger three at the end of the shot clock. She made some big shots, and that is what we expected her to do. I think she is now their leading scorer from a year ago and an upperclassmen for them. I am sure coach Mittie expects her, with Middlebrook not in there, to lead this team."
