K-State Head Coach and Player Quotes
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
"This was not one of our better performances. I did not like our effort in the first half. I did not like our cohesiveness on either end of the court. I thought we were better in the second half. I want to shoot the ball well but we have to play with greater effort."
On passing the ball…
"We were trying to pass the ball better. I felt like we were more willing to pass the ball better. Everybody was working a little better to help each other out. We still threw a lot of 50/50 balls. We were trying harder and at times we passed the ball pretty well."
On Rachel Ranke…
"She is going to stretch the defense. We have to as coaches figure out how to utilize that better. Tonight was a little bit of a rat game. There was a lot of chaos. I never felt like we got too comfortable in it and that is the credit to Florida A&M. I would like to see us play with better consistency against that type of defense. We grinded it out tonight."
Junior Guard Kayla Goth
On the transition to point guard…
"I am starting to get more comfortable in it. My turnovers have been wild and not necessarily under control so I definitely have to get that under wraps to take some more strides forward. I am definitely starting to get more comfortable, though."
On the press they faced tonight…
"I would say we got a little panicked at first. That is something I need to do a better job with – getting everyone calmed down. We work on it every day in practice. I would not say it was frustrating but I think we just have to get it under control a little faster than what we did tonight."
Senior Guard Shaelyn Martin
On shooting a lot of free throws early on…
"Free throws are definitely something we emphasize. If we get to the line it is a break for us and we can regroup ourselves. Getting them in foul trouble is what we need to do – to be in attack mode. That is something that we did a little better than the previous game but can still improve a lot more."
On the press they faced tonight…
"It tends to get us sped up and we just have to realize that we are in control of the ball. We have to run what we want to run and we cannot let the defense dictate what we do. That is just something going forward that we have to make improvements with."
On taking control in the fourth quarter…
"I do not know if it was one specific thing. We did a better job of calming down in that fourth quarter. We got some big rebounds and some big stops on defense. We reduced some fouls and got some big blocks there on defense, too. I think our decision making was just a little bit better in that last quarter."
Florida A&M Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach LeDawn Gibson
On K-State's 21-4 run to end game…
"I think they turned up the defensive pressure. On our end, I thought we played a good first three quarters, but we did not stick to what we were doing. We kind of got stagnant on our offense, which we need to give credit to their defense. We could not score the ball in the fourth quarter."
On Ranke's career high 23 points…
"K-State is a good basketball team. They are huge. We came in knowing they were much bigger than we were and very fundamentally sound. [Rachel] Ranke is a great shooter. I told her she can shoot from anywhere because she can catch and shoot. Much respect to her and much respect to the team. I think they are going to have a pretty good season. I wish them the best, and I think this was a great experience for us."
On junior guard Florence Ouattara's performance…
"She has been consistent our first few games. She has been our best player. But we have to get better and pay attention to details more as a team."
