OPENING TIP
- Kansas State (4-1) concludes play in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational on Friday, as the Wildcats play Atlantic 10 foe George Washington (2-3) in the third-place game at 7 p.m., CT at the Orleans Arena.
- This will be the fifth meeting between the schools with the last three matchups coming since 2011. K-State swept a 3-game series with George Washington, winning 69-56 in Manhattan on Dec. 1, 2011, 65-62 in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 8, 2012 and 72-55 in the last meeting at home on Dec. 31, 2013. The Wildcats are 21-13 all-time against teams from the Atlantic 10, including 3-3 at neutral sites.
- K-State dropped its first game of the season on Thanksgiving, as a late rally fell short to Arizona State, 92-90, despite shooting 57.6 percent from the field (34-of-59) and getting 20-point performances from juniors Barry Brown, Jr., and Kamau Stokes. Down 91-84 with just a minute to play, the Wildcats made a near furious comeback behind consecutive 3-point plays from Stokes and Brown and poor free throw shooting by the Sun Devils. The squad had one last chance after a turnover with 23 seconds to play, but Stokes' 3-pointer fell short.
- The loss spoiled an impressive offensive night, as the Wildcats scored a season-high 90 points on 57.6 percent shooting (34-of-59), including 46.9 percent (15-of-32) from 3-point range. The 90 points tied for the fourth-most ever scored in a loss and the most since the Wildcats scored 95 in a 112-95 at No. 4 Oklahoma on Feb. 13, 1988. The team has scored at least 70 points in all five games and has now connected on better than 50 percent from the field in three of five games.
- The offense was particularly impressive beyond the arc, where K-State's 15 treys tied for the second-most in school history and were the most since also converting on 15 3-pointers in a home game against Nebraska on Jan. 8, 2000 and the most-ever in a game away from home. Stokes' 7 treys were not only a career-high but also tied 13 others for the fourth-most in a game and the most since 2014.
- Brown and Stokes had career nights against the Sun Devils, as they combined for 50 of the Wildcats' 90 points on combined 17-of-29 shooting, including 11-of-19 from beyond the arc. Brown set a career-high with 27 points and posted consecutive 20-point games for the first time in his career, while Stokes narrowly missed his career high with 23 points, including the career-best 7 3-pointers.
- K-State's impressive defensive numbers took hit against Arizona State, allowing 92 points on 54 percent shooting, including 50 percent from 3-point range. The team was whistled for 32 fouls, which ties for the eighth-most in school history, and the Sun?Devils took advantage hitting on 29-of-44 free throws. The Wildcats are still allowing just 59 points on 35.5 percent shooting for the season.
- K-State fell to 0-3 all-time in the Las Vegas Invitational, losing all three games by exactly two points (Kentucky [74-72], Iowa [65-63] and now Arizona State [92-90]. The Wildcats are 4-4 all-time in Las Vegas, including 3-3 at Orleans Arena.
