Wade Records Double-Double, Wildcats Down Emporia State, 77-44

Nov 03, 2017 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Dean Wade pulled down game-highs in both points (20) and rebounds (10) to help Kansas State wrap up exhibition play with a 77-44 win over Emporia State on Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Wade's double-double paced three Wildcats in double figures, along with sophomore Xavier Sneed (13) and junior Amaad Wainright (12). Wainright also added a team-tying 4 assists and 3 steals in 22 minutes.

The Wildcats finished exhibition with a 3-0 record and extended their home exhibition win streak to 23 games dating back to the 2004 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
K-State found a defensive spark early in the first half, forcing 9 turnovers that resulted in 12 points in the early minutes to jump out to an advantage. Junior guard Barry Brown forced two turnovers early in the first half, and accounted for two assists, including one that led to a Kamau Stokes layup in transition. The Wildcats used their opportune defense to shoot 50 percent from the field on 15-of-30 shooting in the first half.

Wade led scorers early shooting with high efficiency from the field in the first half, shooting 6-of-7 and leading all scorers with 15 points, and 9 boards at the break. The Wildcats opened up their largest lead of the half with three-straight three pointers, including back-to-back from Sneed, as the Wildcats led at halftime by a score of 37-21.

Wade expanded on his day in the second half, reaching a double-double off 20 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Wade led all players in both statistical categories, and added 3 assists to his stat-line. Sneed added 13 points, followed by Wainwright with 12 points, as the Wildcats entered three scorers in double-digits in the game.

K-State kept their hot-shooting rolling from the first half, shooting over 52 percent from the field in the game (27-of-51). The hot-spot offensively came in the paint for the Wildcats, scoring nearly half of their points (38) in the key. The Wildcat offense totaled 20 assists in the game, spurred by three individuals, Wainright, Stokes and Cartier Diarra, who each recorded 4 assists.

Defensively, K-State held Emporia State to 29 percent shooting on 14-of-48 shooting, and forced 18 turnovers throughout the span of the game. The Wildcats also crashed the boards with intensity, out-rebounding the Hornets, 37-23. Wade and Mawdo Sallah each recorded one block, as K-State held Emporia State to 44 points in the game, the lowest points allowed through exhibition play.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Wade's stat-line of 20-10-3 records his first double-double of exhibition play, and just the second in any of his K-State career. He also led all players in both points and rebounds in the game, in what was a dominant effort from the junior.

STAT OF THE GAME
29.2 percent – K-State held Emporia State to just 29.2 percent on 14-of-48 shooting on the day, including 4-of-20 (20 percent) from behind the arc. The Wildcats' stifling defense held the Hornets to an exhibition season-best 44 allowed points in the game.

SEASON RECORD UPDATE

  • Emporia State 0-0 (0-0 MIAA)

IN THEIR WORDS
K-State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On getting off to a good start…
"I think we got off to a great start defensively and even offensively. We keep talking about ball movement and I think we moved it well and got open shots, just did not make them. I thought we had a good mindset going into the game and it slipped a little bit. No matter what you say as a coach, trying to get them to stay mentally tough and not slip up is the issue. I thought we kept the number of minutes pretty good. The most number of minutes was 24 for Barry (Brown) and Dean (Wade).  I feel like everybody got good quality minutes."

On Dean Wade's double-double…
"Dean had his second double-double. I told the coaches I think he should have 30 (points) and 15 (rebounds). That is what I expect of him, he is that good. Coach(Chris) Lowery has a saying, "There is no more open than open." If you pass it up, it screws up the offense because you gave up a good opportunity. Sometimes Dean does that because he such a good person and is so unselfish. He has made strides. He is stronger and more active."

On playing aggressive...
"Some of that is confidence. Our new big guys keep watching the game instead of playing. I tell them that I would rather have aggressive mistakes than to hesitate. You have to get experience to become aggressive and play confident and we have been very fortunate to have three exhibition games and get some of those minutes. Now it will be the real thing. We told the guys, basketball is not Halloween. You put a costume on and you get candy. You put a uniform on you do not always get minutes. The new guys have to figure out a role, so when they get minutes they can help our team be successful."

Junior Forward Dean Wade
On the game…
"We played great defense in the beginning. Overall I think we played hard and good. We could not buy a shot early on. We were open we just missed them. We finished out our exhibition good and everyone got a lot of minutes. People stepped up so it was good for us."

On the second half…
"I played pretty well but in the second half but I passed up a lot of shots. This can cause other people to take bad shots because they had to, or turned it over. I was happy with how I played in the first half but the second half I was not to thrilled about."

On improvements since last season…
"I have gained a little more confidence. I have started to understand how to play. I was always trying to be aggressive but this year I am focused on being under control and aggressive. If you are aggressive you make plays and help the team. Being aggressive but in control is just as important as making the shot."

Junior Guard Amaad Wainright
On not getting shots…
"It is tough with how much we practice when our shots are not following. It was frustrating but we finally got it going."

On improvements for the next game…
"There is not too much I want to see fixed. There is just stuff we have to do better defensively and offensively, just moving the ball."

Emporia State Head Coach Shaun Vandiver
On the game…
"We competed and we battled. For forty minutes we gave it our best. We had some break downs but they are a heck of a team. I do not know where they were picked pre-season in the Big Twelve but they are big, long, strong, and athletic. They have two guards Stokes (Kamau) and Brown (Barry) that can make things happen, Sneed (Xavier) who is taking the right steps and then you have Dean Wade who is the leader doing his thing. For us tonight, I was just glad we put them on their heels a couple times, we cut the game to twelve or eleven a couple times. At the end of the day when you give up second chance points with long shots and easy layups, along with breakdowns in transition defense, they wore us down. The other thing is they are about two games in front of us, this was our first game. I am pleased with it but we have a lot of work to do."

On Dean Wade…
"I mean, twenty and ten, three assists, one turnover, a block and a steal, twenty four minutes, he has grown. He had a great high school coach in Clint Kinnamon, my former junior college teammate. He came here and has grown and developed. He is prospering and is taking the next steps to replace Wesley Iwundu and DJ Johnson. The Wildcats are a team to be reckoned with."

Forward Garin Vandiver
On his evaluation of the game …
"We did a lot of great things out there. K-State is a good team so give all credit to them. I like what we did offensively and defensively. We just have to keep going from there.

On becoming more comfortable as the game went on…
"We just stuck to the game plan. Our coaches made a great game plan and we just stuck with it. It is hard when the shots are not falling to really get a grasp of the game, so all we did was stick together as a team. Give credit to K-State for making it difficult for us. We just wanted to stick with it and eventually a shot was going to fall.
