What They Said
K-State Head Jeff Mittie
On the game…
"We needed to get started and we needed to see where we are at right now. We have a lot of new faces. In the first half we had a lot of problems in our defensive rotations. Turnovers were a factor but we settled into the game a little bit better. I think we saw enough good stuff in enough areas that are going to have to improve quickly. We will get some good film on this and make corrections."
On establishing an identity…
"I do not want to put a timeline on it. We saw some good stuff and I am surprised we scored 87 points which is a real positive. We moved the ball well and did good things against the zone. We had not had a practice of 40 minutes of zone. We worked against the zone but not 40 straight. We did enough good stuff. Defensively these areas are not a concern right now. We are really slow on rotations, and fouling too much at the center spot. Those are areas the we have to get much better in quickly."
On defense in the second half…
"I liked our pressure. I liked that we were disruptive in the second half. In the first half we were on our heels. We decided to change a little bit and get more aggressive. That was better but we got extended and they got a lot of offensive rebounds out of that. We have to learn to do both."
Sophomore forward Peyton Williams
On making threes…
"I did not make a three last year. It has been something we have been working on over the summer. To get the opportunity to have that in the game was really cool and see all the work we have put in over the summer. Hopefully it will be more consistent.
Senior Forward Kaylee Page…
On being a leader…
"I was just trying to do what other seniors have done for me. It was their first game so they were nervous and they all had the jitters. It was the first time they have been on a big stage like this. I just tried to over communicate and help them out. That happens, you get in the game and they call a play and you are like 'I have never run this play in my life.' I was trying to be helpful and help them calm down a little. It was fun and we caught our wind and started playing together. We passed the ball and came together as a team."
Emporia State Head Coach Jory Collins
On the game…
"I feel much better about that effort than I did last week against Kansas. The score margin is the same but I thought we fought a little harder today. We are not really a zone team and we played all zone defense today. We have some injuries right now so we are kind of forced to do that. They [Kansas State] play zone all the time and they are really good at it. First half we moved the ball well and got some open shots. It broke wide open in the third quarter. The first couple of minutes we missed some layups and they turned every one of those into baskets and kind of steamrolled us in the third quarter. Outside of that I was proud of our team."
On second chance points…
"Winning the glass was big. We had 23 offensive rebounds. We didn't shoot the ball very good but there is a lot more for us to get. Our whole goal is to set the tone for how hard we play going into next weekend. Regardless of the score and if we miss or make a shot let's just set the tone for the effort we play with."
