K-State Second Half Rally Falls Short on Sunday

STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Playing just the fourth game in program history on New Year's Eve, Kansas State dropped its Big 12 road opener at (24/rv) Oklahoma State on Sunday, 76-68. The Wildcats have now lost three straight.
Kansas State (8-5, 0-2 Big 12) had four players in double figures, led by junior guard Kayla Goth with 17 points and six assists. Goth has led K-State in scoring seven times this season and has handed out five or more assists 10 times.
Junior forward Peyton Williams added 15 points and nine rebounds. This was the eighth game in double figures this season for Williams.
Contributing off the bench for K-State were a pair of freshmen, Rachel Ranke and Cymone Goodrich, with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Oklahoma State (11-2, 2-0) were paced by Kaylee Jensen with 19 points and 18 rebounds, while Loryn Goodwin registered a game-high 21 points with 11 rebounds, six steals and four assists.
Oklahoma State dashed out to a 14-2 lead with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter. The Cowgirls were paced by Mandy Coleman with eight points during the opening minutes. Coleman finished the day with 17 points and five rebounds.
K-State responded with an 11-5 run to close within six, 19-13, at the end of the first quarter. Williams tallied six points in the opening quarter for the Wildcats.
The Cowgirls outscored the Wildcats 16-6 in the first five and a half minutes of the second quarter to build a 35-19 advantage. Goodwin registered seven points during the stretch. Oklahoma State would end the half with a 42-26 lead.
The Wildcats shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24), but K-State was forced into 11 turnovers. Oklahoma State turned those turnovers into 14 points and shot just 37.1 percent (13-of-35) from the field, boosted their point total with an 86.7 percent (13-of-15) effort from the free throw line.
K-State and Oklahoma State played at a higher pace early in the third quarter, but resulted in 10 points for each team in the opening six minutes.
The Wildcats would find their legs, as Goodrich would register six straight points to pull the Wildcats within 13, 55-42. Goth would then hit a jumper out of a K-State timeout and Ranke buried a three-pointer before the buzzer to pull K-State within 10, 57-47, entering the fourth quarter.
K-State's Goodrich scored K-State's first four points of the fourth quarter to bring the Wildcats within eight, 59-51, with 9:08 remaining in the final frame.
The Wildcats continued to rally back, as Goth knocked down a pair of jumpers before Ranke hit a corner three-pointer to bring K-State to within four, 62-58, with 6:44 to play.
The Cowgirls kept the Wildcats at arm's length by using a 10-2 run to build a 72-60 lead with 3:09 remaining. A three-point play from Williams and a midrange jumper from Goth pulled K-State back to seven, 72-65, with a minute to play but Oklahoma State knocked down free throws for the final margin.
K-State shot 43.1 percent from the field for the afternoon (28-of-65) but were forced into 16 turnovers. Oklahoma finished at 36.5 percent (23-of-63) but handed over 17 turnovers. The Cowgirls held a 48-34 advantage on the boards.
