MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State baseball team took the No. 3 team in the country to extra innings Friday night, but a five-run 11th inning helped TCU escape Tointon Family Stadium with a 5-0 victory.
K-State (15-11, 0-4 Big 12) held the third-ranked Horned Frogs (20-5, 6-1) scoreless through the game's first 10 innings behind starter Justin Heskett, who allowed just two hits in seven innings while striking out half a dozen batters in a no-decision effort.
Heskett sat down 17 straight Horned Frog batters spanning from the first to the seventh inning. The right-handed junior allowed back-to-back singles in the first and handed out back-to-back walks to lead off the seventh, but that would be all the trouble Heskett would face on the evening.
"I thought he was outstanding tonight," head coach Brad Hill said of Heskett. "Great job of mixing (pitches) and (Tyler Kincaid) called a great game. He had great composure all the way through, our pitching was very good tonight."
Junior reliever Hudson Treu added 2 1/3 innings to continue the Wildcats' scoreless streak into the 10th inning when lefty Jordan Floyd took over. Floyd entered the inning with only one out and a runner on third base, but struck out Ryan Merrill before getting Michael Landestoy to groundout to end the threat.
After K-State went down in order in the home half of the 10th, TCU right fielder Austen Wade led off the 11th inning with a single and after catcher Evan Skoug was hit by a pitch, the Frogs had two on and one out and Luken Baker singled to score the game's first run.
TCU left fielder Josh Watson singled to first to make the score 2-0 and when center fielder Austin Brown legged out a high hopper to the Floyd, the bases were loaded for Elliot Barzilli. Barzilli laced a bases-clearing double down the left-field line to break the game open at 5-0.
TCU starter Jared Janczak retired the first 18 Wildcat hitters he saw and took a perfect game into the seventh inning, until freshman outfielder Cameron Thompson legged out an infield single for the Cats' first base runner. Janczak would finish with nine scoreless innings and seven strikeouts while surrendering one walk and two hits.
"There's really good pitching in this league," Hill added. "It's one of the best, we saw a couple really good ones last week. We've got to find a way to scratch across a of run somewhere along the way."
K-State's biggest threat came in the seventh inning. Following Thompson's single, Will Brennan laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Thompson into scoring position. Steve Serratore grounded out to shortstop that advanced Thompson to third, but that was as far as any Wildcat baserunner would reach on the night.
Brennan got on in the ninth inning via a two-out single and catcher Josh Rolette drew a walk in the eighth to account for all three Wildcat baserunners on the night.
The loss extends K-State's season-long skid to five games. The Cats went down in order in eight of the 11 innings.
The three-game series continues at Tointon Family Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m., and will stream on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Fans can also listen to K-State baseball on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming free at k-statesports.com.
