MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second straight day, K-State and No. 3 TCU took a scoreless game into the 10th inning, but three straight singles to lead off the inning gave the Horned Frogs a 1-0 victory Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.
TCU (21-5, 7-1 Big 12) got hits from Cam Warner, Evan Skoug and Luken Baker off K-State reliever Bryce Ward in the top of the 10th for the game's lone run. The Horned Frogs have won the first two games of the series – both in extra innings and both shutouts – over the Wildcats.
"Pitching staff is doing a tremendous job," head coach Brad Hill said. "They are really pitching well and we are playing good defense behind them; pitching in tough situations, too. Guys are pitching tough and made the pitches we had to.
"Offensively, we're just thinking too much … We're not free and easy at the plate, a lot of guys are pressing. We're not hitting the pitches we want to hit when we are up in the count."
K-State (15-12, 0-5) got its first hit in the fifth inning – a single from Will Brennan – and had just three hits in the game.
Senior infielder Jake Wodtke led off the bottom of the ninth inning with an infield single – the only inning in which the Cats got their leadoff hitter aboard – but were unable to plate the winning run. Wodtke also reached on an error in the first and later advanced to third but would be left there.
Ward, who entered the game in the top of the 10th, failed to record an out and left the game with the bases loaded before handing the ball to Tyler Eckberg, who induced a 1-2-3 double play and struck out a batter to limit the TCU damage to just one run.
In the bottom of the 10th, Frog closer Durbin Feltman sat down the Cats in order for his Big 12-leading seventh save of the season.
Wildcat starter Parker Rigler went five innings without giving up a run but did allow a career-high seven walks and struck out six Frog batters.
"Proud of how (Rigler) kept making pitches when he had to to keep it at zero," added Hill. "He had a lot of baserunners out there but he kept competing. He gave us what he had for five innings and there were zeroes up there."
Rigler worked himself into a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the third after walking two batters and allowing a single. TCU seemed it would take a lead on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Josh Watson but after Will Brennan's throw gunned down Skoug trying to get to third base before Warner could cross home plate.
The Frogs stranded seven runners in the first four innings on their way to leaving a dozen on base in the ballgame.
TCU's starter, Nick Lodolo, gave up just two hits in seven innings without allowing a run or a walk.
Mitch Zubradt and Nick Jones combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief.
Wodtke, Brennan and Quintin Crandall tallied the three singles for K-State on the day. The Wildcat offense has now been held without an extra-base hit in five straight games and have been held scoreless in four of five conference games.
The three-game series wraps up Sunday at Tointon Family Stadium at 1 p.m. The game will stream live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Fans can also listen to K-State baseball on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming free at k-statesports.com.
