Caron Tied for Sixth in Badger Invitational
Sep 10, 2017 | Men's Golf
MADISON, Wis. – In his first career round, Kansas State men's golfer Matthieu Caron birdied five of his first seven holes as the redshirt freshman is tied for sixth place following the first round of the Badger Invitational on Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course.
At 2-under par 70, Caron leads K-State, which is tied for 14th place at 14-over par 302 through one round. The Wildcats are tied with Nebraska and trail 13th-place South Dakota State Jackrabbits by two strokes.
"I was proud of Matthieu today. He did a great job giving us a solid round his first time out," said head coach Grant Robbins. "As a team, I thought we were very tight starting out and dug ourselves a hole early, which made it difficult to overcome.
"There is a lot of golf left and we definitely have the ability to bounce back. We just have to stay confident and let it happen."
Sophomore Ben Fernandez posted a 4-over par 76 and enters Monday's second round in a 9-way tie for 62nd place. Jacob Eklund and Jeremy Gandon are tied at 78th place, looking to improve their 6-over par 78 scores in round one.
Competing as an individual, JC Campbell carded a 5-over par 77 and is tied for 71st.
Texas A&M jumped out to a big lead in the first round as the Aggies are at 12-under par 276, nine shots ahead of a tie for second place between host school Wisconsin and Nevada. Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M leads the individual competition at 6-under 66, one shot ahead of Wisconsin's Jordan Hahn.
The second round of the Badger Invitational will start at 9 a.m., Monday morning. Live scoring from Madison can be found at www.birdiefire.com with updates posted at www.kstatesports.com following second-round competition.
