MANHATTAN, Kansas – Senior Connie Jaffrey won the third tournament of her career and led the Kansas State women's golf team to its first team victory of the season following the final round of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,235-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.
After setting the tournament record for the lowest individual round in tournament history on Sunday, Jaffrey continued her dominance by finishing six strokes ahead of the field at 6-under par 210. Her 54-score was the second lowest in Sunflower Invitational history and tied for third lowest in school history.
"I'm really proud Connie and the rest of our girls," said head coach Kristi Knight. "They faced different conditions every day, but came out the first day and really made a statement. For Connie to shoot that score in these conditions, that is really great. I'm extremely proud of her."
The Wildcats took home the team title with a 17-over par 881, which is the fourth best 54-hole score in tournament history. It was their third team win in the last two seasons after winning the Chip-N Club last September and the Westbrook Invitational in February.
This weekend's tournament also marked the first time that K-State picked up a team and individual win in the same event since the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate in October 2014 when Olivia Eliasson took home first place and led the Wildcats to victory.
Junior Chloe Weir finished in third place at 2-over par 218, while freshman Reid Isaac recorded her first career top-five finish as she climbed five spots on Tuesday to tie for fifth place at 5-over par 221. A product of Montgomery, Texas, Issac shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to bounce back from a 5-over par 77 in the second round.
Freshman Ella Adams, competing as an individual, tied for 20th place at 13-over par 229. Adams, an Adelaide, Australia native, recorded her first career top-20 finish.
Sophomore Tash Carlsson carded a 17-over par 233 and tied for 30th, while freshman Niamh McSherry jumped two spots to tie for 34th at 19-over par 235. Competing as an individual, freshman Darby Deans tied for 40th at 21-over par 237.
Kansas climbed one spot to finish in second place at 34-over par 898, while Tulsa also jumped up a spot to finish third, one stroke behind the Jayhawks, at 35-over par 899. The Golden Hurricane were led by Johanna Samuelsson, who had the lowest score on Tuesday at 1-under par 71 and finished in second place at even-par 216.
K-State will be back in action Oct. 1-3, as the Wildcats travel to Starkville, Mississippi, to compete in the Mississippi State Magnolia Cup at Old Waverly GC.
