K-State Gets Taste of Conference Competition at Nation’s Oldest Cowboy Jamboree
Sep 28, 2017 | Cross Country
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to compete in the oldest consecutive cross country race in the United States with the 81st running of the Cowboy Jamboree.
Saturday's competition marks K-State's third meet of the season, and its first look at conference opponents, No. 9 Oklahoma State and Oklahoma, among other top programs. The women's race begins at 9:15 a.m. with the men's race following at 9:45.
The K-State women's team is coming off a strong showing at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational, where they placed fourth overall as a team. The focus for the team was to stick together as a pack, and the Wildcats executed, with the top four runners finishing within a second of each other. Sophomore Sydney Collins led the pack with a 16th place finish (22:47.2), with Kayla Doll (17th, 22:47.2), Cara Melgares (18th, 22:47.2), and Emma Wren (19th, 22:47.3) crossing the finish line simultaneously. Head coach Ryun Godfrey liked what he saw from the women's team, and would like to replicate it at the Cowboy Jamboree.
"I think if we do what we did in Nebraska we will be in good shape," Coach Godfrey said. "I really like how the top four girls stuck together throughout the race, I think that is something they can replicate in Oklahoma."
The K-State men's team is looking to improve on their efforts thus far this season as they enter conference competition. The team is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational, headlined by a group of seniors, Jeff Bachman (16th, 26:36.6), Lukas Koch (18th, 26:39.3), Colton Donahue (20th, 26:42.1) and Brett Bachman (23rd, 26:46.0). Godfrey feels confident in the men's team, and hopes to see a solid performance on Saturday.
"The men's team is in a good spot, they have been training well, and now it's time to pick up the intensity," Godfrey said of the men's team. "We're at the point in the season where we continue to build off what we have done and improve throughout the rest of the season."
Both teams will be put to the test on Saturday, as the Cowboy Jamboree features a unique yet challenging course that takes runners through the Oklahoma State campus and through several elements, including hills, woodchips and steps. The course features a 6k race for the women and an 8k race for the men.
K-State has a history of competing at the Cowboy Jamboree, dating back to 1990. Shadrack Kimeli holds the K-State men's 8k course record with a time of 24:17 registered in 2001, while Beverly Ramos holds the K-State women's 6k course record with a time of 20:30 in 2008.
The Cowboy Jamboree marks the third meet of the season for K-State, as the Wildcats move into the bulk of their 2017 schedule. Following Saturday's meet, the teams travel to Peoria, Illinois on October 13 to compete in the Bradley Invitational.
