MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Wildcats returned to action on Saturday at the 81st running of the Cowboy Jamboree Invitational, as both the men's and women's teams fared well against tough competition, with the men placing seventh with 155 points, and the women placing eighth with 186 points.
Among the competition, the women's race was led by No. 16 Mississippi, No. 9 Penn State and Missouri, who finished first through third, respectively. On the men's side, No. 9 Oklahoma State took home their eighth consecutive Cowboy Jamboree title, followed by nationally-ranked Mississippi (No. 25) and Penn State.
The K-State women hit the course first, and were led out by junior Emma Wren, who paced the Wildcats with a 25th place finish coming in at 21:57.8. Wren was followed by senior Kayla Doll (22:02.7), Sydney Collins (22:13.2), Cara Melgares (22:34.9) and Erin Lee, who competed in her first career race finishing with a time of 23:36.4.
"The girls did a nice job," head coach Ryun Godfrey said following the meet. "It was a tough, challenging course against some good teams, but I thought they did very well keeping the gap close."
In the men's race, the Wildcats were led by senior Colton Donahue, who placed 22nd overall finishing with a time of 25:21.8. Donahue was followed by fellow seniors Jeff Bachman (25:38.9) Brett Bachman (25:51.3), Lukas Koch (25:52.9) and Bryan Zack (25:54.8), who all ran course personal bests. Overall, Godfrey was impressed with both teams' efforts, and feels confident moving forward.
"Everyone ran hard from the sound of the gun," Godfrey said. "I think we took a big step forward today, and we're looking to continue to take steps forward and build our confidence heading into the Big 12 Championships."
Next up the Wildcats have a week off before traveling to Peoria, Illinois to compete in the Bradley Pink Classic on October 13. The Bradley Pink Classic marks the last regular season competition for the Wildcats, as the team prepares for the Big 12 Championships on October 28 in Round Rock, Texas.
