K-State Ends Weekend With Five-Set Loss at Georgia Tech

Sep 08, 2017 | Volleyball

ATLANTA – K-State fended off two match points and erased a five-point deficit in the fifth set before succumbing to Georgia Tech (25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14) Friday night in the finale of the Georgia Tech Invitational at O'Keefe Gymnasium.

K-State (4-5) ended the two-day, four-team tournament in second place with a 2-1 record. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Schultejans and senior opposite Bryna Vogel were both selected to the all-tournament team. The honor is Vogel's second this season while Schultejans earns her first-ever all-tournament nod.

Schultejans ended the weekend with 3.08 kills per set while hitting at a .284 clip, including a season-best 19 kills (.349) Friday night. Vogel hit .328 with 2.42 kills a set to go with 2.33 digs per set over the weekend.

Friday night, K-State posted its highest attacking percentage (.305) in a five-set match since 2007 and its fifth-best output ever during the rally-scoring era (since 2001). Georgia Tech (5-5) and K-State played a five-set match for the second straight season, each winning on its home floor.

Four Wildcats reached double-figure kills, including middle blockers Macy Flowers and Elle Sandbothe who registered new career highs with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Schultejans was one kill shy of matching her career-best output with a match-high 19. Flowers hit .579 (2e-19ta) to lead the Cats.

K-State trailed Georgia Tech, 12-7, in the deciding set when junior transfer Brooke Smith picked up a pair of service aces that ignited a five-point Wildcat run to level the score. Two points from the Yellow Jackets gave them match point, but a kill followed by an ace from Vogel knotted the match, 14-14. Tech scored the next two points for the victory.

It was just the second fifth set to go to extra points in K-State history and it was the only set in the match in which the Wildcats hit below .200. The Cats registered a season-best 74 kills, 69 assists, 61 digs and equaled their season-high of eight service aces.

Despite hitting .333 and matching Georgia Tech in kill production with 16 in the opening set, K-State never held a lead as Georgia Tech hit .452 (2e-31ta). The Wildcats cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to a single point at 10-9 but a spurt of three consecutive points gave GT a cushion it would maintain. Schultejans tallied seven kills on 13 swings with only one error in the set to lead the Cats.

K-State killed the ball at an even better rate in the second set, hitting .389 (17k-3e-36ta), only this time it was able to limit Georgia Tech's productivity to .135 (11k-6e-31ta). An early 7-2 run from K-State made the score 13-8 and the Cats held the lead to a 25-16 set victory. Flowers killed five balls on seven swings without an error in the set. Schultejans chipped in three more on six swings to reach 10 kills after the first two sets, hitting .474 in the process.

Set three had a similar narrative for K-State, as the Cats hit over .300 (.344), led by Zumach with six kills on 11 swings. However, Georgia Tech hit .379 in the frame while leading throughout. K-State had three service errors in a 25-21 set loss.

K-State erased a five-point hole in the fourth set and had a stretch where it outscored GT 10-1 midway through to force a fifth and final set. Four Cats – Sandbothe, Zumach, Schultejans and Flowers – each recorded four kills in set four. Zumach ended the night with 15 kills.

Setters Sarah Dixon and Smith dished out 34 and 29 assists, respectively. Smith's 29 assist were a career high while Dixon added a career-high 15 digs en route to her second double-double of the season.

K-State had a 10-kill edge (74-64) and 10-assist advantage (69-59) over Georgia Tech. GT tallied one more team block (7.0-6.0) and five more digs (66-61).

K-State returns to Ahearn Field House as it welcomes UMKC for a Tuesday-night showdown on September 12. The Cats and Roos (3-5) will meet at 6 p.m. CT and will be shown on K-StateHD.TV and COX Xtra.
