Late Comeback Falls Short for K-State Against (24/24) TCU
Jan 24, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State cut a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to just two with under a minute remaining, but the Wildcats were unable to complete the comeback as (24/24) TCU avoided the upset with a 68-63 win on Wednesday night in Bramlage Coliseum. Wednesday's game marked the seventh contest in K-State first nine Big 12 games this season against an Associated Press top-25 opponent.
Kansas State (11-9, 3-6 Big 12) had four players in double figures and were led by junior guard and All-Big 12 candidate Kayla Goth with her fourth double-double this season with 17 points, a career-high tying 11 assists, seven rebounds and three steals.
With her 11 assists, Goth has five games this season with 10 or more assists and moved into 23rd on the K-State career assists list with 222 in her three seasons in Manhattan.
Freshman guard Rachel Ranke added 16 points including a 4-of-11 effort from beyond the arc, and six rebounds. Ranke has six games this season with four or more connections from beyond the arc and ranks fifth in school history for 3-point field goals made by a freshman with 57.
Sophomore forward Peyton Williams added 11 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Kaylee Page notched 10 points and a career-high five steals.
TCU (14-5, 5-3) received 33 points from its bench, led by Amy Okonkwo with a game-high 22 points in 24 minutes of action.
With the assistance of a 7-0 run halfway through the fourth quarter, K-State clawed back within six, 62-56, with 4:29 remaining in the game. Goth started the rally with a layup and Kali Jones added a layup on a pick and roll with Goth. Shaelyn Martin completed the run with a 3-pointer and force a TCU timeout. Martin finished with five points, five rebounds and two assists.
Following the timeout, the Horned Frogs beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer from Kianna Ray with 3:55 remaining in the game. K-State's defense tightened and the offense took advantage with another 7-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to pull within two, 65-63, with just over a minute remaining.
Another defensive rebound for K-State with just over 30 seconds to play resulted in K-State with an opportunity to tie or take the lead. Goth's baseline jump shot just rolled out with 15 seconds left. The Wildcats had one more chance to tie the game, as TCU made just 1-of-2 free throws with 11 seconds to play. K-State's inbound pass after a timeout was deflected and stolen by TCU to seal the win.
Kansas State finished the night by shooting 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the floor, while TCU notched a 44.2 percent (23-of-52) performance. The Horned Frogs were 13-of-15 from the foul line, while K-State was just 7-of-11.
K-State dashed out to a 9-5 lead with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter, as Williams registered seven of K-State's first nine points including a three-pointer from the top of the key.
After a 5-0 run by the Horned Frogs, Kansas State recaptured the lead at 15-12 as Ranke buried the first of her two first quarter 3-pointers at 3:42 of the opening stanza. Ranke closed the quarter with consecutive field goals to register 10 of K-State's 20 points and hold a 20-15 lead entering the second.
TCU started the second quarter with a 9-2 run to force a K-State timeout, as the Horned Frogs went in front, 24-23, with 6:12 remaining in the first half. Kansas State responded to the timeout with four straight points to move into a 27-24 lead with 5:23 remaining.
After three points from TCU, Kansas State used a Page three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Goth to build a 32-27 lead with 2:37 to play. TCU ended the half on a 7-2 run to send both teams into the locker room at half tied at 34.
TCU would build an eight-point lead, 44-36, with 7:31 to play in the third quarter. Sydney Coleman knocked down a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to stake TCU to the advantage. K-State would only be able to bring the game back to within six, as the Horned Frogs would build an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 58-47.
Kansas State will turn its attention to the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Sunday, as the Wildcats travel to Lawrence to face Kansas at 4 p.m. Sunday's game will be broadcast to a national audience on FS1 and will be available throughout the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
On cutting the lead down late in the game…
"We had it at two with the ball so we had our chances. You always debate on whether you should take a timeout or not and I certainly had them. I felt like TCU was in a little bit of a scramble mode and I did not want them to get set. I like the ball in KG's [Kayla Goth] hands so I felt okay with that. I would take it again. The execution on the out of bounds play [earlier] was not executed very well. We had some things that I think we wish we would do better but I liked our fight and I sure liked our comeback. Peyton [Williams] fouls out with a little over five to go and our group just continued to fight. Kali [Jones] gave us a big lift in that stretch, got some deflections and got some rebounds. I thought Rachel [Ranke] really rebounded the ball well in that stretch. Goth played well in that stretch so we are fighting. We are definitely not seeing the result we want but I like the fight in our group."
On the effort after Peyton Williams fouled out…
"Yeah I thought we played well and did some really good things. I was proud of our group for fighting back and I just told them in the locker group that I knew we had some players that were playing some extended minutes in that stretch but I sure liked our fight. I liked our toughness down the stretch. We would like to have the middle part of that game back. We made some mistakes in the second quarter and did not play very well in the third quarter. The middle part of this game hurt us. We played well at the start and at the finish."
On TCU's depth tiring out K-State …
"I did not think we handled their press as well as we talked about. I did not think we were as aggressive there as we needed to be and we will discuss some of that. I thought we were kind of leaving our feet and looking for passes as opposed to handling that how we were supposed to, so I did think they had us on our heels there. That was not a point of discussion on the bench, that we were tired out there. We have just felt like we need to attack them better. We finished strong. We had some bodies go down but they bounced back up and competed hard so I felt okay with that."
On their intention with the ball down three late…
"We had several options. We had [Kaylee] Page for a three, we had [Kayla] Goth for a lob, we had Rachel [Ranke] for a three coming off all of that action. We still had enough time to take a quick two. We had enough time to do that. There was 12 seconds or so to go so we felt like if they were guarding the three that we would take the play to Goth for the two. We still had the timeout to advance again if we needed to, which we would obviously need to do. So we had two options for a three and one option for a two."
On trying to shut down Amy Okonkwo…
"She is obviously a very good player. We gave her the free throw line too much. The strategy was not to give her the left hand or the three and we were not very successful with that. We gave her a couple squared up threes. She knocked down one in transition in the corner. That one I think TCU did a nice job. The other two were some missed assignments on her but we did a great job on [Jordan] Moore. If you said that duo combine for 29, I think their average is about 35, we would take the total number for those two. We would just like to see Okonkwo off the free throw line a little more because she is over 90 percent so if you put her there she is going to knock them down."
Freshman Guard Rachel Ranke
On her 16-point performance…
"Well, tonight I think my teammates had a lot of trust in me. It was a rough start to the game with that brick off the backboard, but shooters shoot, so I am glad that my teammates trusted me."
On TCU's defense in the second half compared to the first half…
"I think they were a little tighter on me, but it is going to happen. As a shooter, they are going to be tighter on you, so use a shot fake or a rip and go, so there are other options."
Junior Guard Kayla Goth
On her pull up jumper down two in the fourth quarter…
"I will take it in another game, I got it off clean, and that was what we were looking for. It's my go to move, so I am going back to it as much as I can."
TCU Head Coach Quotes
TCU Head Coach Raegan Pebley
On the game…
"I was really worried about playing this team. I had every right to be worried. They are just a tough match up for a lot of teams in this conference. They maybe one of the toughest teams to match up to. They execute really well and play their strengths really well. This was a hard fought win for us. We had a lot of players step up in different moments and played some of their best basketball. That is what it took to beat K-State here tonight."
On defensive full court pressure in the second half…
"We cannot do that if we are not in condition. If our team comes into practice not working as hard as we do and if we do not have our strength and conditioning coach and athletic trainer working as hard as they are for us."
On shutting down Rachel Ranke in the second half…
"I do not think we did a whole lot differently in the second half. We were lucky enough that she missed some shots because she still had some shot attempts."
On Kansas State…
"They compliment each other so well. They have a player like Kayla Goth doing what she does in the paint on the perimeter at the point and at the two or three guard. Then she has great shooters around her like Page, Williams and Rachel Ranke. You have to respect what Shaelyn Martin and Williams can do out there. They all make each other better because of their personnel and again that is why they are challenging to defend."
