MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team will join its conference brethren Friday through Sunday at the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament held at the par-71, 7,007-yard Club at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
Getting away from the normal 54-hole stroke-play format with the four lowest players on each team counting toward the team score, the Big 12 will be the first conference to host a match play tournament, which is the same format that determines the NCAA Men's Golf National Champion.
"We are really excited for this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "This is the first match play event we've played in and it's going to be something our guys will really enjoy. We have a great opportunity to go head to head against the best teams in the country."
The Wildcats will send Seniors Jeremy Gandon, JC Cambell and Roland Massimino, Juniors Ben Fernandez and Jacob Eklund, Sophmore Kyle Vance, and Freshman Will Hopkins to the inaugural event.
"The key for us is to stick to our gameplan, focus on the things we can control, and play to win, Robbins said. "Anything can happen in match play and as long as we have the right mindset and play to our capabilities, we will be in position to win and that's all you can ask for".
The three-day event will consist of of pool play for two and a half days (five sessions) followed by a championship round during the afternoon of day three. During pool play, each team will play four head-to-head team matches comprised of six individual matches apiece. Teams get three points for winning the overall team match and one point for a draw.
The 10 Big 12 teams are split into two pools based on Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat Rankings. The Wildcats, seeded 10th, will be off on Friday morning before taking on second-seeded Oklahoma in the afternoon. On Saturday, K-State takes on No. 7-seed Iowa State in the morning and third-seeded Texas in the afternoon. The Wildcats round out pool play by taking on sixth-seeded Baylor on Sunday morning.
Following pool play, each team will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on the amount of points scored. The Championship Match will feature the highest point total from Pool A and the team with the highest point total from Pool B. There will also be third-, fifth-, seventh- and ninth-place matches.
