Wildcats Conclude Regular Season at the Bradley Pink Classic
Oct 12, 2018 | Cross Country
PEORIA, Ill. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up their regular season in rainy conditions at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday, where the K-State men placed two individuals in the top-30 overall, while the women turned in several notable performances at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois.
Â
Senior Joe Gorthy and freshman Cooper Schroeder each placed in the top-30 overall of a competitive men's field, including Gorthy's 26th place finish in 25:13.7 and Schroeder's 27th place finish in 25:14.1. The duo led the Wildcats to a 19th place team finish, as the Wildcats gear up for the Big 12 Championship on October 26 in Ames, Iowa.
Â
"The conditions were really tough today, it was about 37 degrees and heavy rain, so the course and turns weren't as easy to maneuver," Head Coach Ryun Godfrey said. "But everyone gave it their all and I think there were some good performances."
Â
In addition to Gorthy and Schroeder, junior Travis Hodge set a personal best in the men's 8k race on Friday, running a 26:30.7 to finish 159th overall. Freshman Charlie Parrish, competing in his home-state of Illinois, placed 134th overall in 26:18.5, while redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman rounded out the K-State top-five finishers in 26:40.0 in 176th place.
Â
For the K-State women, senior Emma Wren put together a strong performance in the women's 6k race to lead the Wildcats, finishing in 21:51.7 in 54th place, followed by sophomore Cara Melgares, who finished in 21:56.1 in 66th place.
Â
With five Wildcat runners entered in the women's 6k, K-State turned in their best effort, including a pair of personal bests from sophomore Kassidy Johnson, who crossed the finish line in 22:03.3 to place 83rd and junior Anna Keeley, who placed 140th with a time of 22:32.9. Sophomore Victoria Robinson also came close to eclipsing her personal best, finishing in 24:07.6, just off her personal best of 24:03 set at the Rim Rock Collegiate Classic two weeks ago.
Â
"They have been training really hard and may not have been as fresh as we will be in a few weeks," Godfrey said of the women's team. "But overall I liked what I saw from them today, especially Anna [Keeley] and Kassidy [Johnson]."
Â
With the Wildcats concluding their regular season on Friday, they will shift their focus to the Big 12 Championships in Ames, Iowa on October 26. Following the Big 12 Championship, K-State will make a return trip to Peoria, Illinois, as the Wildcats compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional on November 9 at Newman Golf Course.
Â
"We will take the weekend to recover a little bit, but from there we will get right back at it from a training standpoint and prepare for Big 12's in two weeks," Godfrey added.
