K-State Earns Three Medals at Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday

Oct 21, 2018 | Rowing

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team competed in their first regatta of the fall season, as three Wildcat boats medaled, including a compelling second-place finish in the collegiate women's 300-meter sprint finals at the Jayhawk Jamboree in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday.

"I think it was a good change in pace. The team seemed to enjoy the competition and I think they did a very nice job," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. "Overall the team rowed well today, now we will go back to training and just keep trying to get better."

With the Jayhawk Jamboree marking the first competition of the season, K-State looked to expand upon their fall training on Sunday. In the first race of the day, the collegiate women's 4+, the K-State 'B' boat registered the fourth-fastest time of 15:56.1.

The Wildcats found their first medal of the day in the collegiate women's novice 8+, where the K-State boat consisting of coxswain Morgan Thompson and rowers Maya Morrow, Rebekah Cain, Madison Jensen, Megan Kelly, Elizabeth Sloan, Laura Gillum, Elizabeth Mummert and Kate Odgers, fought to a second-place finish in 15:42.3.

In the collegiate women's 8+ race, all three K-State boats qualified for the 300-meter sprints, including a hard-fought bronze medal performance from the K-State 'A' boat, made up of coxswain Emily Johnson and rowers Taylor Flowers, Mikaela Bennett, Mattie Warner, Elaina Grantham, Grace Reilly, Kennedy Felice, Logan Frost and Abigail Dressler. The K-State 'B' and 'C' boats followed the bronze medal performance with top-10 finishes, coming in at seventh and ninth, respectively.

In the collegiate women's 8+ 300-meter sprints, both the K-State 'A' and 'B' boats won their heat in the opening round to qualify for the semifinals, guaranteeing a K-State boat would make the event final.

In the second heat of the 300-meter sprint semifinals, the K-State 'A' boat and K-State 'B' boat faced off for a bid to the finals against Kansas. Both K-State boats fought to the finish, as the K-State 'B' boat inched ahead to win the race in 58.1.

In the 300-meter sprint finals, the K-State 'B' boat, consisting of coxswain Allie Kleinsmith and rowers Kaylin Edwards, Caroline Geither, Marisa Rodriguez, Jordan Lund, Natasha Johnson, Nikole Cain, Rachel Haskell and Taylor Hartman fought to the finish to earn the silver medal, finishing in 59.5.

With their fall racing schedule complete, the Wildcats will turn their focus to the spring season, as the Wildcats open their season on March 2, 2019 at the Oklahoma Scrimmage in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

With high winds causing rough water on parts of the course, officials canceled the women's novice 4+ due to unsafe conditions.
