Wildcats Get First On-Water Action at the Oklahoma Scrimmage on Saturday

Feb 28, 2019 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will look to get their first on-water rowing action of the spring season this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to participate in a scrimmage with the University of Oklahoma on Saturday.

The scrimmage, which takes place on the Oklahoma River, will feature two training sessions throughout the day, which gives the Wildcats the opportunity to train with a familiar Big 12 team in Oklahoma.

"I think for the team it's just nice to get out on the water and have a change of scenery," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said in preparation for the Oklahoma Scrimmage. "It should be a change from just training here, it's an opportunity to get on the water and be out in the fresh air."

This year marks the fourth-consecutive season the Wildcats have traveled to Oklahoma City to scrimmage with Oklahoma, as the Wildcats get set for the spring racing season. After their scrimmage on Saturday, K-State heads to California for a nine-day spring training stint, where they compete at the Hornet Invitational on March 16-17.

K-State had their last opportunity to train on the water during their winter camp in Austin, Texas on January 8-19. Since then, the Wildcats have been able to prepare physically for the spring season.

"The team has done an excellent job coping with not being on the water and they have done really well with their training," Sweeney said in regard to the team's training this winter. "They have really taken on the difficult challenge and have stepped it up again this year."
