Deans, Fortushniak Record Top-20 Finishes

MANSFIELD, Texas– The Kansas State women's golf duo of freshman Heather Fortushniak and sophomore Darby Deans each turned in solid performances on Tuesday en route to top-20 finishes in the UT Arlington Invitational at the par-71, 6,095-yard Walnut Creek Country Club.
Fortushniak tied for 12th place at 14-over par 227, while Deans tied for 18th at 16-over par 229. Fortushniak's tournament featured an impressive 1-under par 70 on Tuesday. She collected four birdies and three bogeys, and her 18-hole performance was one of the few under-par rounds throughout the tournament.
"I am happy to see Heather turn in an under-par round today," said head coach Kristi Knight. "She did a good job keeping the ball in play most of the day. I am very proud of both Darby and Heather. It was fun watching them play."
Deans, a product of Frisco, Texas, maintained her steady performance as she carded a 4-over par 75 during the final round with one birdie.
"Darby did a great job of staying calm after being 3-over after two holes," said Knight of Deans, who double-bogeyed her first hole and bogeyed the second. "She did not let it get her down. She hit a lot of good shots playing the next 16 holes 1-over."
Sam Houston State's Jenna Phillips took home the individual title as she shot a 2-over par 215, edging out Siti Shaari of South Alabama by two strokes.
The Wildcats will be back in action October 29-30, when they look to defend last year's title at the Trinity Forest invitational in Dallas Texas.
