Sooners Quiet Cats Wednesday Night

Oct 24, 2018 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Oklahoma stifled the K-State offense Wednesday night behind 19.0 team blocks, limiting the Wildcats to a season-low .120 hitting percentage, as the Sooners took a four-set decision, 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, at Ahearn Field House.

K-State (12-8, 2-7 Big 12) snapped its two-match winning streak while Oklahoma (13-8, 5-4 Big 12) sweeps the season series for the first time since 2012. Redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne led the Cats with 14 kills and junior Elle Sandbothe added 10 to go with a team-best seven block assists.

"We didn't think we were as sharp, but I think Oklahoma is a really good team – specifically, a really good defensive team," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "They do some terrific things at the net, which made it really difficult on us to try and kill balls. I thought they were the better serving team and I thought they were the better defensive team. Sometimes those things are tied together.

"They did the same thing to us [in Norman], in all honestly. They're very good at taking stabs at balls and staying in it long enough until you're not."

After falling into a two-set hole and trailing 15-10, K-State utilized a 9-1 run and battled to a 25-23 victory in Set 3. Heyne and Sandbothe each picked up five kills in the set, helping the Cats to an 18-13 edge in the frame.

The Sooners rattled off six straight points early in the fourth set on their way to a 25-19 win. OU held the Cats under a .200 hitting efficiency in all four sets, including two sub-.100 sets.

Oklahoma picked up 7.0 of its season-high 19.0 blocks in the opening game, as middle blocker Brianna Kadiku and setter Kylee McLaughlin teamed up for five block assists each. Set 1 saw 15 tied scores and seven lead changes, as neither side was able to open more than a three-point cushion. Heyne, along with freshman Gloria Mutiri, each picked up four kills in the frame while Sandbothe had three on seven swings without an error.

Kadiku finished with 10 block assists. Paige Anderson ended the night with nine block assists while McLaughlin turned in seven.

OU hit .256 in the match and out-produced K-State in kills, 58-49. Four Sooners, led by Alyssa Enneking's 18, reached double figures.

K-State setter Sarah Dixon had 14 digs to go along with 39 assists for her seventh double-double of the season. Mutiri equaled Dixon's team-best 14 digs while senior Devan Fairfield contributed 11.

Mutiri had six blocks for the Cats and picked up nine kills. Three of K-State's five service aces were tallied by senior Reilly Killeen.

The Cats hit the road for a Friday night match at Iowa State which will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU at 7 p.m. Rob Voelker will also be on the call on New Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio streaming on K-StateSports.com/watch.
