Cyclones Earn Four-Set Win Friday

AMES, Iowa – K-State's Sarah Dixon and Kylee Zumach each turned in double-double efforts Friday night, but the Iowa State Cyclones came out with a four-set victory, 25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-15, at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State's (12-11, 5-4 Big 12) offense produced 67 kills while hitting .307. The Wildcats (12-9, 2-8 Big 12) were held under a .200 team efficiency (.173) for the second straight match, totaling 49 kills. Zumach paced the Cats with 14 kills while Elle Sandbothe and Alyssa Schultejans each totaled 11 kills for the Cats.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to take a 2-1 match lead, as they had set point at 24-22 in the third set. The Cyclones responded with four straight points to claim the pivotal set and go on to win their 11th straight over the Cats in Ames.

In addition to leading K-State in kills, Zumach added 17 digs while Dixon handed out 43 assists to go with 10 digs. Senior libero Devan Fairfield recorded 19 digs, a team high.

Sandbothe turned in her 11 kills on 17 swings without an error as she led the team with a .647 hitting efficiency while also tying for the team lead with two block assists. Freshman Gloria Mutiri managed eight kills and 10 digs with a block.

The opening set went the way to the Cyclones, 25-15. ISU was aided by a 10-1 run early in the game that included a string of seven straight points before closing on 7-2 spurt. Mutiri and Sandbothe each collected three kills to lead the Cats, who were limited to .077 in the frame (11 kills, 8 errors, 39 attacks) behind four ISU blocks. Conversely, Iowa State hit .333 as a team.

K-State rebounded to level the match at a set apiece after a 25-21 win in the second set, which held 11 tie scores. Neither side was able to put together a scoring run larger than three points, as the teams alternated seven straight points in the midway stages of the set. Mutiri ended the game with her first block and Sandbothe picked up six kills on seven swings without an error.

Trailing 22-19 in the third set, the Wildcats rattled off five straight points and had two set points at 24-22. However, the Cyclones responded with the last four points of Set 3 to take a 2-1 lead. Schultejans accounted for six of the Cats' 15 kills in the set. Iowa State hit .300 while registering 19 kills.

After the Wildcats scored the first four to open up the fourth set, ISU proceeded to score the next six as part of a 9-1 run. The match ended with Iowa State recording eight of the final 10 points for its 11th consecutive win at home over K-State. Seven of Zumach's 14 kills came in the fourth game and the Cats were out-killed, 16-10.

Iowa State was paced by Grace Lazard and her 17 kills (.500). Lazard was one of three Cyclones in double figures and was joined by Jess Schaben (16) and Josie Herbst (13). Lazard also led ISU with seven total blocks.

Four Iowa State players had at least 10 digs, with libero Izzy Enna turning in a team-high 19.
