What They Said
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Thoughts on first game...
"It was not a good offense performance. We have been that way a little bit this year and we are trying very hard individually to make some plays. We do not play very well together as a team right now. We have not had a lot of continuity in practice. I am not going into details why we just have been in and out of practice. I am really proud of our group defensively. I did not think we were mature enough as a young group to play defense as well through a really bad shooting night. Young players tend to play better and with more energy when the ball goes into the basket. That is what I am most pleased about because I have been on them in practice about playing better defense when things aren't going well. We made some silly fouls there at the end to give Fort Hays State a opportunity to get back in it with the clock stopped but those are coachable moments that we can work on in practice."
On turnovers tonight…
"I just go back to the continuity of us passing the ball and being confident that the player to the left to me is making the cut I expect her tonight and the player to the right of me is making that play as well. We were standing a lot. Fort Hays State was denying us which I felt like they should not be able to do with what we are running. Right now our timing is off, we are out of and out of rhythm, all of those things are big factors in the offense. We really have struggled with understanding where the opening our in practice maybe we look good in spurts but it was good to see a team guard us differently than we have been guarded in practice. Offensively we have known that we are the type of team that will be really good for six possessions then really bad for six possessions. We do not know who our best scorers are right now there was a stretch where I had to introduce Peyton (Williams) to everybody. I had to say get Peyton the ball… We have a lot of work offensively we definitely need to understand who needs to get touches in those critical stretches of the game. It was good to be in that position tonight. We did give Peyton the ball in a couple areas late which showed progress."
On Chrissy Carr's performance...
"Chrissy got moved to point guard on Monday, that's a hard thing to get thrown at you on Monday before you play on Thursday. For us right now it's out of necessity, because we have some things we've got to improve at the point guard spot. Savvy has only been in six or seven practices coming off the wrist injury. We haven't even had a consistent, able to - that's why we moved Chrissy there on Monday, saying hey we at least have to have some depth here. So I wouldn't judge that too much, she's playing out of position right now and I'm sure she felt a lot of anxiety doing that, but I think she handled things pretty well tonight. Obviously she's was pressing" to make some baskets, but we'll work our way through that."
On Jasauen Beard's play…
"I think JB's done pretty good stuff, almost a double double. We've got to eliminate those turnovers. We've been pleased with her, she did a great job on Lanie (Page) tonight, we gave her that assignment on Lanie. Lanie gets three (points), she had 21 at Kansas, she did a great job on her. I think what you see with Beard is we're going to be able to do some things defensively with her and she's going to fit in nicely as this offense progresses."
On Kayla Goth being close to returning…
"Yeah she is, she is. I think if we were playing in conference she could probably play. But I'm going to be honest, I want that thing to be 100 percent. I think the benefits of us kind of grinding through this will benefit our team later. I wanted her to take the boot off about the third quarter, but I still think it's better for our team to grind through this and it's definitely better for her to get it 100 percent."
K-State Sophomore Guard Rachel Ranke
On the 3-point shooting…
"It was definitely frustrating, but we can't live by the three and die by the three. We are going to have bad shooting nights, and one of them was unfortunately tonight, but all we can do is get past this and worry about what's next."
On Kayla Goth's absence…
"We could have used Kayla (Goth) of course, but there are times where we are going to have injuries and we need other people to step up. It would have been nice to have her, but we needed other people to step up tonight."
K-State Junior Forward Peyton Williams
On finding her rhythm…
"I think going back to finding my confidence from last year. I wasn't getting it in the beginning, but I was just relying on my teammates to not get me the ball if they didn't think I could score. I was just trusting the shots I've had in the preseason."
On the last minute…
"It was just the time of the game where we looked at each other and said let's go. They just played a really tough game against Kansas, and so we had to prove that we had to win that game right now. I just tried to do my job as best as I could."
