MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference named K-State freshman Gloria Mutiri as its Rookie of the Week for the second time this season for her efforts in the Wildcats' four-set win over TCU last week, the league office announced Monday.
Mutiri, a 6-foot-2 opposite, tallied 15 kills on 31 swings (2 errors) for a team-high .419 hitting efficiency in the Cats' comeback win over the Horned Frogs last Wednesday. Defensively, Mutiri tied for the team lead with four block assists while also registering 11 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Earlier Monday, the Sand Springs, Oklahoma, product was named Second Team All-Big 12 and was also a unanimous Big 12 All-Rookie Team selection. Mutiri finished the year second on the team with 271 kills (2.77 per set) while also hitting .263 with 192 digs (1.96 per set), as she primarily played six rotations in her initial campaign.
The weekly accolade increases K-State's season total to eight awards, as she along with redshirt junior Sarah Dixon, redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne and redshirt senior Kylee Zumach have each been named players of the week. The Cats' eight total honors this season are tied for the most in the conference with Baylor and TCU and are the most by a K-State team since earning eight weekly awards in 2014.
Dixon and Zumach each earned two Offensive Player of the Week honors while Heyne and Mutiri both picked up a pair of Rookie of the Week awards. Mutiri's selections increases K-State's total to 55 weekly honors under 18-year head coach Suzie Fritz.
K-State finished the 2018 season with a 15-12 mark (5-11 Big 12), Fritz's 14th winning season as head coach.
