Taubert, Booth Claim Pentathlon Crowns at the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2018-19 indoor season on Friday, where juniors Lauren Taubert and Aaron Booth claimed victories at the Carol Robinson/Attila Zsivoczky Winter Pentathlon at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kansas on Friday.
Between the men's and the women competition, the five-event pentathlon featured eight Wildcats, four of which were making their pentathlon debut at K-State. Competing unattached, Booth won the men's competition by totaling 3,873 points, while Taubert won the women's competition with 3,792 points.
"It has been great being able to train together and compete together, I think we really push each other" Taubert said of fellow juniors Morgan Coffman and Ariel Okorie.
The men got things started with the 60-meter hurdles, where sophomore Tejaswin Shankar won the individual event by running an 8.57. Following Shankar, freshman Matas Adamonis placed second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.65.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Taubert was able to run the quickest time of 8.62 to earn 991 points, while Okorie placed second closely behind Taubert in 8.66.
Booth took over the men's pentathlon lead during the second event, the men's long jump, where Booth won the event with a jump of 7.18m/23-06.75, which garnered him 857 points.
In the women's high jump, Taubert and Coffman each cleared 1.67/5-05.75 to earn 818 points, while Okorie cleared 1.64m/5-04.5 to earn 783 points. The junior trio went on to throw over 10 meters in the women's shot put, with Taubert leading the way with a throw of 10.54m/34-07.
Later in the day in the men's high jump portion of the pentathlon, reigning NCAA outdoor high jump champion, Shankar reached the highest mark of 2.12m/6-11.5 to win the event, while Booth placed second with a jump of 2.00m/6-06.75. Shankar's jump moved him within 200 points of Booth going into the final event.
In the final event of the men's pentathlon, the 1,000 meters, Booth, Shankar and junior Kyle Parr battled for the front of the pack, before Shankar took over the lead going into the final lap. Shankar was able to win the 1,000 meters in 2:48.76, closely followed by Booth in 2:49.69.
After the finish of the men's pentathlon, the women concluded their competition with the 800 meters. In the race, Coffman and Taubert shared the lead throughout the 800 meters, before Coffman claimed the victory in 2:20.96. Taubert went on to win the women's pentathlon with 3,792 points, followed by Okorie (3,696 points) and Coffman (3,518).
The Carol Robinson/Attila Zsivoczky Winter Pentathlon serves as the pre-cursor for Saturday's K-State Winter Invitational. The K-State Winter Invitational begins at 9:30 a.m. with the start of the field events, followed by the track events at 1:00 p.m. Admission to the event is free.
