Turnovers Plague K-State in Loss at (6/6) Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – In a matchup between two programs ranked among the top 25 in NCAA Division I women's basketball history for all-time program victories, (6/6) Texas defended its home court with a 76-54 win over Kansas State on Saturday night at the Erwin Center. This was K-State's 10th game against an Associated Press top-25 opponent this season, including its eighth in Big 12 action.
Kansas State (13-12, 5-9 Big 12), who entered Saturday with 927 wins in its 50-year history, was led by Peyton Williams and Kayla Goth. Williams finished with 13 points, four rebounds and a block, while Goth added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Goth is the second player in program history (Megan Mahoney; 2002-03) to score 400 or more points and hand out 150 or more assists in a season.
Texas (20-4, 11-2), with 1,056 wins in its history, was paced by senior Brooke McCarty with 17 points while Joyner Holmes added 11 points.
K-State shot 39.5 percent (17-of-43) from the field, but were hounded into a season-high 25 turnovers. Texas tallied a 40.6 percent (28-of-69) effort and tallied a 20-2 edge in fast break points.
Kansas State opened the game shooting 80.0 percent from the field, but were plagued by seven turnovers. Texas took advantage of the extra chances and built a 14-9 lead with 4:28 to play in the first quarter.
K-State tightened its defense and used a 10-0 run to take a 19-17 lead with 1:09 to play in the opening quarter. Kaylee Page provided a bookend with three-pointers to start and end the run.
The Longhorns took the lead entering the second quarter, as Alecia Sutton knocked down a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 23-21 lead. K-State would finish the opening quarter shooting 7-of-9 from the field but suffered 10 turnovers.
The Longhorns used an 8-2 run early in the second quarter to build a 31-25 lead with 5:02 remaining in the quarter. A corner 3-pointer from Shaelyn Martin brought K-State to within three, 31-28, with 3:15 in the first half.
It would be the last field goal for K-State in the quarter, as Texas used another 8-2 run capped by another buzzer beating jumper from Sutton to hold a 39-30 lead at the half. K-State was outscored
K-State narrowed the deficit to six, 39-33, just thirty seconds into the third quarter as Williams finished a three-point play. Texas turned up the pressure and used a 9-2 run to increase its lead to 48-35 with 6:54 left in the third period.
Texas stepped on the accelerator following a K-State timeout with 6:11 to play. Brooke McCarty scored eight straight points to send the Longhorns to a 58-39 lead with 4:17 left. The Longhorns would end the quarter with an 8-3 run and hold a 66-44 lead heading to the final quarter.
Both teams went through extended dry spells from the field in the fourth quarter, as teams would tie the final frame, 10-10.
Following a break during the midweek, Kansas State will return to the road on Saturday, February 17, at (24/24) TCU. The second game of this two-game road trip will tip-off in Fort Worth at 2 p.m. The game will be available on FOX Sports Southwest and on the K-State Sports Network.
