Wildcats in Eighth at Seminole Intercollegiate
Feb 24, 2018 | Men's Golf
With Ben Fernandez residing in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, the Kansas State men's golf team is in eighth place following the first and second rounds of the Seminole Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Golden Eagle Country Club.
As a team, the Wildcats got off to a hot start as they were in third place at 2-under par through the first 18 holes. However, K-State struggled to match its first-round score as they are at 5-over par 581, one stroke away from a tie for sixth place.
"We got off to a really good start today, but unfortunately we could not keep it going," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The guys did a really good job of grinding out some pars, but we were just too inconsistent with our iron play."
Fernandez, a native of Texas, fired an eagle in the first round en route to a 2-under par 142 to tie for 14th. He is just two strokes away from residing in the top 10.
Junior Jeremy Gandon carded an even-par 144 on Saturday and enters the final round tied for 21st. Backed by eight birdies – including five in the first round – Jacob Eklund is tied for 26th at 1-over par 145.
Matthieu Caron carded a 6-over par 150 to reside in 48th, while Kyle Vance is tied for 72nd at 16-over 160.
Host school Florida State sits atop of the leaderboard with a strong lead at 19-under 557. Florida State's Jamie Li is the front runner on the individual leaderboard with a 7-under par 137 score.
The final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate begins at 8 a.m. (ET) Sunday morning. Live scoring from Tallahassee can be found at www.golfstat.com, while final results will be posted at www.kstatesports.com.
