K-State Celebrates 50th Season with Home Finale Win
Feb 24, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Playing in front of over 70 former players during the celebration of the 50th season in program history, Kansas State extended its win streak over Kansas with a 91-67 win on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats have now won nine straight over the Jayhawks.
The 91 points on Saturday marked the most K-State has scored in regulation against Kansas and the most since a 92-91 double overtime win in Lawrence on February 26, 1979.
Kansas State (14-14, 6-11 Big 12) saw four of its five starters reach double figures, as junior guard Kayla Goth and sophomore forward Peyton Williams each registered 21 points. Freshman guard Rachel Ranke notched 19 points, while senior Kaylee Page recorded 13 points.
Goth recorded a double-double with a career-high 12 assists, while also pulling in six rebounds. The 12 assists are the most by a K-State player since Shalee Lehning tied the school record for assists in a game with 13 against Drexel on March 21, 2009, in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Goth is just the sixth player in program history with 12 or more assists in a game.
Williams recorded her 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting and pulled in five rebounds and finished with three blocks. Williams now has 14 games this season with 15 or more points and five or more rebounds.
Ranke finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc on Saturday. This was her eighth game this season with four or more connections from beyond the arc.
Page was also strong from beyond the arc, as she was 3-of-5 for the day. The forward from Wamego, Kansas, has 40 career games with two or more made 3-pointers while K-State improved to 27-13 in games that Page makes two or more 3-pointers.
Kansas (12-16, 3-14) also had four of its five starters in double figures. The Jayhawks were paced by Kylee Kopatich with 17 points, while Tyler Johnson added 15 points and five rebounds.
K-State finished the game shooting a season-high 56.9 percent (33-of-58) from the field. The Wildcats tied their season-high with 12 made 3-pointers and registered a season-high 57.1 percent from beyond the arc. For the first time this season, K-State was over 50.0 percent from the field in all four quarters and scored 20 or more points in all four frames.
The Jayhawks ended the contest at 42.1 percent (24-of-57). K-State outrebounded the Jayahawks, 31-28, and held a 20-15 edge in second chance points.
The Wildcats were able to secure a 20-19 lead after the first quarter, an opening quarter that featured three ties and six lead changes. Ranke knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, including her second with 16 second remaining to give the Wildcats the one-point lead. Ranke's 3-pointer sent K-State into a lead it wouldn't relinquish for the final 30 minutes.
In the second quarter, K-State opened the frame with an 8-0 run capped by a long rebound and fastbreak layup from Goth to force a Kansas timeout with 7:08 remaining in the first half and K-State leading 28-19.
Kansas State continued to apply pressure, as Ranke and Goth buried 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to increase the lead to 37-24 with 3:53 to play. Ranke's fourth 3-pointer of the first half came at the 3-minute mark and boosted the Wildcat lead to 40-26.
A pair of 3-pointers from the Jayhawks near the end of the half brought the score to 44-34 at the break. The 44 first half points marked the most by K-State in a Big 12 game this season and the most since the Wildcats scored 51 against Chicago State on December 18.
The Wildcats shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field in the opening half, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. K-State also took care of the basketball with 12 assists to just two turnovers.
K-State outscored Kansas 27-18 in the third quarter, as Page led the Wildcats with 11 points in the frame including three connections from beyond the arc.
In the fourth quarter, Kansas used a 6-0 run to pull within 15, 73-58, with 7:15 remaining to force a K-State timeout. After the timeout, K-State used an 11-4 to build its lead to 84-62 with 2:28 remaining in the game. K-State would cruise down the stretch, as Williams and Ranke each hit three-pointers to seal the win.
Kansas State will play its final regular season game of the 2017-18 season on Monday night at Texas Tech. Game time in Lubbock, Texas is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday night's game will be broadcast on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and will be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
On strong offensive performance…
"I thought we had better player movement, and we had sharper ball movement. We had 24 assists and last game we only had five. I thought all in all we were better in every single area. It was not just [Kayla] Goth. While she probably ended up with the ball in her hands the most, I thought all our players were more aggressive. I thought Shaelyn [Martin] was so much more aggressive with the ball in her hands and she was able to open things up so much better for us.
On defensive performance…
"I thought it was okay. I think our effort was good, activity was solid but awareness was not great at times. We were screaming not to let [Kylee] Kopatich open in the first half. We were playing so hard that our focus was not quite where it needed to be. Second half I think we still had great effort, but we had much better focus.
On sending seniors off with a win against rival Kansas…
"It feels good. We needed this one with smiles and we needed to feel good about a game. Obviously, we needed to play well because there was a lot going on in this game. There was a lot of emotion and I was concerned about how focused we would be and what distractions would we allow in. All in all, I thought our group looked good today. They had a right emotion in the locker room. They were not overly pumped, and I felt good coming into the game. To shoot the ball the way we did I think we became relaxed and got between the lines and played."
On having 50 years of past K-State women's players honored at the game…
"I think it is really cool to have that large number of our players back. We talk to our players all the time about the responsibility of carrying the torch for the past players that paved the way for us to have so many things today in our athletic program. At our reception last night, I thought it was so cool to meet some people that I had never met before. Our administration did a great job with getting a good number of families and players back. Our players enjoyed the exchange with the first team. It is amazing to have that many players come back from the first team. I hope our seniors and players realize how special that is to be a part of something for the rest of your life. To put in all the work and come on campus and still be a part of it, and to have life-long friends because of it."
K-State Senior Forward Kaylee Page
On what Senior Day meant…
"I tried not to think about that until after the game because this was a big game for seeds in the Big 12 (Tournament) and stuff. And KU just came off a big win so we were trying not to overlook them and focus on the game. Afterwards, it is always really cool to celebrate with such great people I've gotten to go through the last few years with."
On beating in-state rival Kansas for Senior Day…
"It felt good. Very, very good. It felt awesome."
On growing up a K-State fan and playing for them for three and a half years…
"It has honestly been awesome and like I said, the K-State family has just adopted us with open arms and I could not have asked for a better support system from the fans, to my coaches, training staff, whoever. I can't put it into words. I just could not have asked for better."
On guarding Kylee Kopatich…
"It was a conversation we had at halftime. We decided we should probably try to cheat out more to her to not lose her. I felt like we did a better job of that in the second half and just communicating more when she was running through."
K-State Senior Guard Shaelyn Martin
On what Senior Day meant...
"I'm sure it will hit both of us more after the season is over, but we are here to keep playing and make it as far as we can. I think we had the focus of that and we're representing the past 50 years of the program. I think we put the focus on the program and playing well together."
On what changed between the first and second quarter to extend the lead to double digits …
"I think we just really settled in and simplified things. We were all together, communicating on defense and just rotated really well. The little things that weren't quite clicking at the beginning started to come together."
On growing up a K-State fan and playing in Manhattan for four years…
"It meant everything. When you're that little girl and you want to play somewhere and to actually come and do it is something special and you hope that other people are able to accomplish. But I can't even put into words what these four years have been like. I feel like I just came in as a freshman yesterday, but it has been one of the best experiences of my life."
