K-State Downed by Iowa State on Saturday

Feb 03, 2018 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State looked to defend its home court on Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum, but strong first and third quarters from the Cyclones sent K-State to its fifth home Big 12 loss in six games this season, 80-45. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Wildcats against the Cyclones.

Kansas State (12-11, 4-8 Big 12) was guided by Kayla Goth with 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. This was Goth's 22nd game this season in double figures and her nine rebounds tied her career-high. With her four assists, Goth now has 239 in her career and moved into 21st on the K-State assists list.

Joining Goth in double figures was sophomore Peyton Williams with 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one block. Williams has scored in double figures in 16 games this season.

Iowa State (10-13, 4-8) saw four players in double figures led by Adriana Camber with 21 points and Meredith Burkhall with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

The Cyclones were hot from the field in the first five minutes of the opening quarter, outscoring K-State 17-7 and shooting 67 percent from the field. The Cyclones continued to pour in the points for the remainder of the quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 25-13 in the opening frame. Iowa State finished 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first quarter.

The Wildcats clawed their way back into the game, using an 11-3 run to close to within six, 30-24, with 3:59 remaining in the first half. Goth started the run with a pair of jumpers, while Rachel Ranke provided her first 3-pointer of the night.

K-State would pull within four, 33-29, as Shaelyn Martin pocketed a steal and finished a fastbreak layup with 2:22 to play to force a Cyclone timeout. This would be the closest K-State would be for the rest of the contest.

Iowa State would keep K-State off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half and Camber would score five points in the final 1:30 of the second quarter to give Iowa State a 38-29 lead at halftime.

Kansas State struggled to open the third quarter, going 0-of-6 from the field as Iowa State built a 17-point lead, 46-29, with 7:56 remaining. The Wildcats were able to narrow the deficit to 12, 46-34, as Williams ended K-State's scoreless drought at five minutes with a jumper at 7:13 of the third quarter while Ranke followed by knocking down her second 3-pointer of the night.

K-State finished the third quarter shooting 3-of-20 for the entirety of the frame, as Iowa State used a 12-2 run from Burkhall alone to put away K-State and lead 61-38 entering the final 10 minutes.

The 45 points and the field goal percentage of 24.6 percent (17-of-69) were season-lows for the Wildcats. Iowa State finished the night shooting 44.1 percent (30-of-68) which included a 15-of-31 performance from beyond the arc. The Cyclones held the edge on the boards, 55-37.

Kansas State will conclude a two-game home stand to begin the month of February on Wednesday, as the Wildcats host Texas Tech at 7 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on Cox Channel Kansas and K-StateHD.TV. The game will also be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.

What They Said

K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
On the game…
"We were not very good. They shoot 41 percent of their shots from the three. This is something we talk about in the scout. We cooled them off a little bit in the second but ultimately it did not matter at the end of the game tonight."

On shooting…
"We have a good portion of our group that is really struggling with their confidence right now. I feel bad for our group. We are just out of sync and struggling with those things. It snowballed on us tonight."

On the first half…
"I did not like our last two possessions of the half. They got two fairly good possessions. They got (Adriana Camber) on a runner at the end of the half. We would have like to have been within five or somewhere in there. We had it there, we just did not end the half very well."

On Adriana Camber…
"I thought she had a good look to her. They did a good job of moving the ball to her. She had a good look. Camber shoots the first shot of the second half on the right wing and then she gets another one on the left. Coming out of half she was who we talked about at half time. That tells me a lot about our focus and how locked in and committed we are to getting that done. Right now it is snowballing on us and we are just going to have to fight our way out. That is a great example of yes, Camber was hot and we give her credit, but we gave her two shots right out of halftime after just talking about her."

On Rachel Ranke
"Rachel is standing too much. That is easy to guard. Teams are putting a lot of focus on her but Rachel is also standing way too much. She is 0-for-5 inside the arch tonight. She is going to have to do some different things to get people off of her. They are paying more attention to her but she is getting plenty of opportunities to play better. She is just struggling like everybody else right now. We are just struggling to find the right play."

Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly
Opening statement…
"Obviously that was the best game we have played all year, by far. K-State has an outstanding team and program. We were due for one of these and all of our frustration came out in one night. Everything we did was right. We shot it great. You have 30 field goals on 25 assists. Bridget [Carleton] and Emily Durr were our fourth and fifth leading scorers. Meredith Burkhall, AD [Adriana Camber] and Maddie [Wise] were phenomenal. It is just one of those nights that happens in this league to you and it has happened to us. We have been on the other side of it, believe me, but I am very proud of our team. This has always been a hard place for us to come into and play. I thought the second half especially was as good as this team is capable of playing and they sustained it over an entire half, which I am very proud of."

On Adriana Camber…
"AD has struggled obviously. We worked against the triangle-and-2, we anticipated that, the way Emily [Durr] and Bridget [Carleton] have been playing. She had some good looks early and I think she hit her first three. She is someone that we run a lot of stuff for but she needed it. She is a great kid and has really struggled. We put her back in the starting lineup a couple games ago. She ended with 21 points, had to guard Kayla Goth a lot, too, so I thought she did it at both ends. Much needed for her – that is a kid that needed to smile and she got to smile big tonight."

On getting the lead early…
"We got off to a great start in the first quarter which was important. I thought the biggest part of the game was probably when we called a timeout when Shaelyn [Martin] got the steal and they cut it to four. We called timeout, finished the half, got up nine and I thought we made a great last call and hit a three at the buzzer. Then, we came out the second half. That is the thing you talk about. You have a nine-point lead and every coach kind of says the same thing: make them call the first timeout. I thought the first five minutes of the second half gave us a working margin after that. It is very hard to come from that far back, especially when we are making shots and not turning the ball over. They have to gamble a little bit, the court opens up a little bit and it kind of feeds on itself. Like I said, it has happened to us. The last two minutes of the first half and probably the first four minutes of the second half were the deciding factors in the game."

On what he told his team at halftime…
"We talked about being on the road and playing a good team. The last time we played K-State we had a seven-point lead going into the fourth quarter and lost, so we just said 'you have to keep playing' and 'get off to a great start'. We had the ball to start the second half and basically told them 'let us see if we can play at a level where they have to call the first timeout'. We had a nine-point lead and said 'can we get it to 15'. Nothing crazy, just outscore them by six. Like all coaches now, it is about winning quarters. We did not win the second quarter so we said 'win the third quarter'. We played a great first five minutes, had enough of a working margin, luckily they missed a couple shots, luckily for us we made a couple and get away from them a little bit."

On their defense…
"I thought our attention to detail was good. We tried to run [Rachel] Ranke and [Kaylee] Page off the three-point line. We did a decent job on [Kayla] Goth. She is tough to guard because she can get in the lane and draw fouls. We tried to avoid that and make sure they did not get too many easy post touches. Defensively we were solid. I thought we defensive rebounded better and were not giving them second chance points. We also did not foul much and that is kind of one thing that we have had trouble with when we have struggled – committing some unforced fouls and bailing people out. We were very fundamental and I thought we had a good plan. Coach [Jodi] Steyer scouted K-State, I thought we had a good idea of how we wanted to play and to the kids' credit, the execution was pretty good."
